The Wife You Buried Is Back from Hell novel Chapter 355

Curious about what was going on, Millie headed toward the office.

She reached the door and gave it a gentle knock.

She hadn’t even finished when someone opened up.

Seeing who it was, Millie paused in surprise. “You?”

Danielle clearly hadn’t expected to run into Millie at the Blackwood Research Institute, of all places.

“Can I help you with something?”

Millie glanced at her. “Are you here organizing files for Dr. Gresham?”

She peered inside; aside from Danielle, there was no one else.

Danielle met her gaze with calm composure. “If there’s something you need, you can tell me.”

Millie folded her arms, a wry smile tugging at her lips. “I’m here to see Dr. Gresham for some advice on my dissertation. If I tell you, are you qualified to help?”

They were hardly on the same level.

She was submitting papers; Danielle, as far as she knew, probably hadn’t even gotten close to that stage.

Danielle lowered her eyes, glancing at the stack of documents in her hands.

Word had gotten around: Alexander had arranged for Dr. Gresham to be Millie’s advisor.

So it made sense Millie would come with her paper in hand.

Her tone was mild. “Go ahead and wait inside.”

Millie shot Danielle a look, then stepped into the office. “All the projects are underway. AetherX Dynamics is ready to cooperate on anything now.”

Ninesky had just signed with a major supplier in the Midwest, plus they still had Vanguard Technologies on board.

There was no rush to find new partners—after all, the existing collaborations were still in place.

Ninesky’s resources were hers to use.

Danielle took one look and could already read the calculations going on behind her eyes.

“Miss Fletcher, your memory must be short. I explained this quite clearly at yesterday’s meeting.” Danielle’s voice was steady, almost cold. “Shall I remind you that you’re about to trigger the penalty clause in your contract?”

“What makes you think we’re obliged to keep working with you?”

Millie lifted her chin, eyes full of disdain.

“AetherX Dynamics hasn’t breached the contract. Our suppliers ran into trouble and that set us back. What grounds do you have to kick us off the project? Since when do you get to call the shots at Ninesky?”

She looked down her nose at Danielle, practically radiating arrogance.

Danielle’s brow tightened just perceptibly.

Alexander hadn’t made a final decision yet, but Millie already sounded so self-assured.

Maybe he’d already decided and just hadn’t sent the notice.

Danielle’s lips curled in a cold, dismissive smile as she turned and left the office.

Millie decided she’d won the exchange—Danielle had simply run out of things to say.

Left alone in the office, Millie waited, but there was no sign of the so-called genius who was supposed to help with her paper.

She glanced down at the desk and happened to spot some A4 sheets lying there.

A set of technical sketches.

“Even if you’ve patched the holes in AetherX Dynamics’ operation, their repeated delays are a problem. The sections assigned to them are lagging, and leadership isn’t happy. If you insist on this, when trouble comes, you’ll have to answer to the higher-ups yourself.”

“These government defense contracts are not child’s play, Mr. Davidson. You’d better take this seriously.”

Alexander listened to her every word in silence.

He idly rubbed his fingertips together, eyes narrowing. “Is that what you really think?”

Danielle frowned slightly.

He answered every question with another question. This wasn’t the first time she’d found Alexander impossible to pin down—never stepping into a conversational trap, always wary of being outmaneuvered.

A man born for the negotiating table, every response sounded like an answer but could be taken a dozen different ways.

“This is a minor crisis. She can handle it herself.”

Danielle looked up at him, understanding his meaning.

Millie could handle her company’s mess—so she was qualified to stay on the project.

“Alex.” Dr. Gresham’s voice sounded from down the hallway. “Did you bring Millie with you?”

Alexander nodded. “Dr. Gresham.”

Dr. Gresham came closer, a warm smile on his face. “Since you left this field, it’s rare to see you around here. Now that someone’s finally caught your eye, you’re willing to tag along?”

A faint smile touched Alexander’s eyes, his tone even. “No need to tease me, Doctor.”

Dr. Gresham sighed, the affection in his eyes tinged with regret. “Such a shame—your mentor passed away far too soon.”

Danielle paused, surprised despite herself.

Even she couldn’t help glancing at Alexander in astonishment.
