Her heart dropped into her stomach, a phantom hand squeezing her chest so tightly she couldn't breathe.
Alex was hurt.
He was seriously injured.
No wonder he wouldn't turn on his camera. No wonder he had lied about being in the shower.
Her fingers trembling, she furiously typed out a message: *"You're hurt? How bad is it? Why didn't you tell me?!"*
She stared at the screen, her heart pounding against her ribs as she waited for the typing bubble to appear.
Back in Penang, Alex had just set his phone down when it buzzed.
The moment he saw the text, he knew Rebecca had sold him out.
He let out a dry, resigned laugh and rubbed the bridge of his nose. The gig was up. *"It's fine. Just a few scrapes. Rebecca's overreacting."*
Even now, he was trying to downplay it to keep her from panicking.
But how could she not panic?
If Rebecca felt the need to warn her, it was absolutely not "just a few scrapes."
Tears welled in Dani's eyes as she read his pathetic excuse. She fired back: *"What do you mean 'fine'? A sprained wrist, severe bruising, and soft-tissue damage is not 'fine'! Why do you always have to act so tough?"*
*"If you're hurt, tell me! It's not like I'm going to be mad at you! Lying to me just makes me lose my mind with worry!"*
Slouching deeper into the sofa, he typed back: *"I promise it looks worse than it is. A few days of rest and I'll be good as new. Don't stress."*
*"How am I supposed to not stress?"*
Dani's response was instant. *"You're in a foreign city with no medical backup and no one to look after you. How am I supposed to sleep knowing that?"*
