Jamison couldn't possibly be keeping something this big from everyone. If he was going abroad for six months, he would have to tell his family something, at the very least asking his brother and sister-in-law to look after their parents. She had to find out if they knew what was really going on.
Davina picked up quickly. “Ivy?”
“Hi, Davina, it’s me,” Ivy said politely, getting straight to the point. “Jamison suddenly said he’s going to Germany for a six-month training program. Do you know anything about this?”
Davina was taken aback. “Jamison’s going to Germany again? By himself?”
“I think so.” Ivy was surprised that Davina didn’t seem to know either. Was he planning to hide this from everyone? “He said it’s a training program organized by the hospital, for six months, and that he’s leaving next week. But something about it feels wrong, so I wanted to ask if you or Thad knew anything.”
“Ivy, don’t worry. Let me ask your brother. Maybe they talked about it privately,” Davina said, sensing something was off as well and trying to soothe her.
“Okay.”
After hanging up, Ivy stood frozen for a moment before resuming her search for the medical report.
On the other end, Davina wasted no time and immediately dialed her husband’s number. Thad was in a meeting, and his personal phone was on silent, so the call went unanswered. Realizing the urgency, Davina immediately called his executive assistant.
A moment later, the assistant entered the conference room and whispered to Thad, “Mr. Ludwig, your wife is on the line. She says it’s important.”
Sensing trouble, Thad paused the meeting and stepped out. When he called his wife back, her first words were, “What’s wrong with Jamison? He’s going to Germany for six months. You must have known about this, right?”
Having been part of the Ludwig family for nearly twenty years, Davina knew everyone well. Jamison wasn't impulsive. He wouldn’t make such a major decision without at least telling his older brother, even if he didn’t announce it to the whole family. His parents were still alive, and his sister was unstable. He would never leave without ensuring things at home were settled, not to mention he had a wife of less than a year, and they were still in their honeymoon phase.
Thad understood immediately. “Did Ivy call you?” he asked.
“She did. So you do know about it. What is he really going to Germany for? Don’t tell me he’s like Farley Shepherd, with a secret mistress and child stashed away overseas!” Davina said, trying to provoke him into revealing the truth.
It worked. Thad became flustered. “Of course not! Jamison isn’t that kind of person. He’s completely devoted to Ivy.”
“Then what is it?”
Thad hesitated. He had promised his brother he would keep the secret.
Davina pressed him. “Thad, if you don’t tell me, I’m going to tell Ivy that you know the real reason, and that she should come ask you herself.”
