“Alright, if I don’t mind, why are you so upset? The important thing is that the check-up is done. We’ll just wait three days for the results,” Ivy said, trying to comfort him.
Hearing her say “I don’t mind,” Jamison shot his wife another resentful glare. “I’m going to work. You should go to school,” he said curtly.
Normally, he would have walked her gently to the car and given her a loving hug goodbye. But today, he wasn’t in the mood. He turned and walked away without a backward glance.
Ivy watched his tall, slender back, her mind filled with images of him at night, unclothed. Strong, sexy, and captivating, every muscle defined and powerful, perfectly proportioned.
Tsk, to let a female doctor see all that… it did feel like a bit of a loss.
After a few moments of idle thought, Ivy chuckled to herself and headed towards the parking lot.

Back at school, Ivy was busy with her thesis, leaving early and coming home late every day. Jamison had arranged for a driver to take her to and from campus so she could still stay at home. Occasionally, when he was free, he would drive her to school himself.
One morning, as Jamison was getting out of bed, he said, “I’ll take you today. Try to be quick so we can leave early.”
Ivy was in the middle of brushing her teeth. She turned to look at him. “You don’t have to. If you’re busy, you can go ahead. Why do you need to drive me?”
“It’s on my way. I have a consultation at Pinevale Regional Medical this morning,” Jamison explained. He had gotten home after she was already asleep the night before and hadn’t had a chance to tell her.
Since that was the case, Ivy didn’t refuse. She quickly finished getting ready, and they left together. They bought breakfast from a small shop downstairs, and on the way, Ivy ate while also feeding her husband.
As they neared the school, Jamison’s phone rang. The number looked familiar, like the landline for the hospital’s check-up center. He figured his test results were ready.
Putting on his Bluetooth earpiece, Jamison answered, “Hello…”
“Professor Ludwig, this is the check-up center. You had a full physical a few days ago, and we found some abnormal indicators in your liver function tests. To be safe, could you please come in for a more detailed examination when you have a moment? Or you could have it rechecked at the outpatient clinic.” The doctor on the other end was polite but firm.
Jamison knew that if a physical exam showed no major issues, they usually just sent a text to pick up the report. A direct call from a doctor urging a follow-up meant the problem was likely serious and required further investigation to either determine the cause or rule out any potential threats.
“Bring it home tonight so I can see it,” Ivy instructed.
“Okay.”
They finished their conversation just as they arrived at the university. As Ivy got out of the car, she turned to say goodbye, adding one last reminder, “Remember to bring the report home tonight.”
“I will,” Jamison nodded, his expression carefully neutral.
But as he drove away, his face grew grim. He immediately picked up his phone and redialed the number. After a brief conversation, his expression became even more somber.
Around noon, after finishing his business outside the hospital, he went straight to the check-up center to get his report. He scanned the results as he walked briskly towards the inpatient building. The outpatient clinic was closed for lunch, so he went directly to the hepatobiliary surgery ward to find a specialist.
When he showed the report to the specialists, several experienced department heads all wore grave expressions. After a brief discussion, one of them looked at Jamison and said seriously, “Professor Ludwig, you should have another liver function test and a contrast CT scan done today. We suspect—and this is just a preliminary suspicion—that you may have liver cancer. To avoid a misdiagnosis, we need to conduct a more thorough examination.”
