“Ivy? Oh… Manager Zoe called her into a meeting!”
“Where’s the meeting? Could you please take me there?” Jamison’s tone was cool but polite.
The male colleague who answered him felt an inexplicable urge to comply. “It’s upstairs. I’ll take you,” he said, quickly getting to his feet.
“Thank you.”
When the meeting room door was knocked on and Jamison appeared behind it, Ivy was genuinely startled.
“What are you doing up here?” she blurted out in surprise.
Jamison tapped his watch. “It’s already seven o’clock. The whole family is waiting for us for dinner.”
His words made the two senior executives and several other department heads in the room feel rather embarrassed.
Ivy quickly stood up. “Mr. Crawford, Mr. Lawrence, it’s a family member’s birthday today, and we have a family dinner waiting for us.”
“Oh, is that so!” The two executives immediately rose, apologizing profusely and explaining to Jamison, “Mr. Jamison, we’re truly sorry. We lost track of time.”
Jamison pursed his lips and gave a curt nod in greeting. He walked over and took his wife’s hand. “Can she leave now?”
“Yes, of course! Ivy, thank you for your hard work today!” the executives said, nodding politely again.
Ivy offered a courteous smile. “Mr. Crawford, Mr. Lawrence, I’ll be going then. I’ve already explained my position. Please consider it.”
“Of course, of course. You two should hurry back.” The executives stood up and saw them to the door.
Without a single word of courtesy, Jamison pulled Ivy away and left without a backward glance.
As they walked downstairs, Ivy noticed people from every department craning their necks to watch them.
She frowned, then looked at her husband and understood. “You didn’t go from department to department asking for me, did you?”
“What other choice did I have? I waited in the car for an hour.” Dr. Ludwig had a temper too. He had never waited for anyone in his life, let alone for a full hour. His rear end felt like it was glued to the driver’s seat.
Ivy was being pulled along, only able to see his profile from behind. It had been a while since he’d given her the cold shoulder. Instead of getting angry, she found his current mood rather amusing.
“Alright, alright, I know the great Mr. Jamison has been wronged. I’m the first person to ever make you wait, right? Remember on our trip when you said you wanted to unlock many more ‘firsts’ between us? Doesn’t today count as one?”
They had reached the elevator when Jamison turned around, his dark eyes glaring at her.
“This counts?”
Ivy was still sucking in a breath of air. She swatted at him several times in protest. “You’re terrible! We have to go to the family estate later. How am I supposed to face everyone like this?”
“Just say you have a canker sore from stress.”
“Like anyone would believe that! I’ll just say a dog bit me.”
“You wouldn’t dare.”
“Just watch me!”
Their playful bickering continued until Jamison’s phone rang again.
“Hello… Yes, I’ve got her. We’re on our way back. Don’t wait for us; go ahead and eat.”
After hanging up with his brother, Jamison glanced over at her. “Do we still need to go home for the gift, or should we just head straight there?”
“Of course we need the gift. It’s on the way, it won’t take long.”
Jamison didn’t think it was necessary, but he went along with his wife’s wishes.
