Just moments ago, he had been breathing fire. Under normal circumstances, he never would have compromised so easily.
She watched until the door clicked shut behind him.
The tension finally drained from Felicia's body. Lowering her eyes, she stepped forward, picked up her purse from the sofa, and headed toward the master bedroom.
She slipped inside as quietly as possible.
A warm, dim light illuminated the room. Anne was sound asleep in the middle of the bed. Suddenly, the little girl kicked off her blankets, rolled over, and settled onto her side.
Felicia hung her purse behind the door, walked over, and sat on the edge of the bed. She gently pulled the covers back over Anne, tucking her in securely. Looking at her daughter's soft, chubby cheeks, Felicia felt her heart melt completely. She sat there in the quiet for a long while before finally standing up to take a shower and get ready for bed.
Knowing her father was leaving early, Anne woke up unusually bright and early.
First thing in the morning, someone arrived to deliver a fresh set of clothes for Max.
Mabel prepared breakfast and set it on the table.
Felicia pulled out a chair. "Anne, time to wash your hands and eat."
Anne was busy playing with two little kittens. Hearing her mother, she immediately dropped her cat toy, and Felicia led her to the sink to wash up.
Max was still in his room changing.
Felicia and Anne waited for him at the table.
"Why is Daddy taking so long?"
Felicia glanced toward the guest room. She had noticed his face looking a bit off earlier. "Mommy will go check on him."
Anne nodded obediently.
Felicia walked over to the guest room and stood by the door. Hearing no movement inside, she raised a hand and knocked. "Are you ready?"
No answer came from within.
