"Daniel is currently observing the situation," Darin said as he hung up the phone, offering Felicia a comforting look. "As for whether he makes any moves later, we just have to wait. But the Hawthorne family still has Miranda, and if push comes to shove, Max's father certainly won't sit idly by."
Felicia offered a small nod of understanding. As Darin returned to reviewing the files, she managed to eat only a fraction of her food before her appetite completely vanished. Darin watched her quietly pack away the containers, letting out a soft sigh of heartbreak. He knew her greatest fear right now was Anne growing up without a father.
He simply refused to believe Max was truly gone. A man of his caliber did not die so easily. For now, all they could do was wait. Pushing his thoughts aside, Darin focused his attention back on the encrypted files on the monitor.
By six o'clock in the evening, Darin turned to her. "Felicia, you need to go back and get some proper rest. Maybe there are some important documents left at your apartment anyway. If there is any news, I will contact you immediately."
Given her fragile state, he feared she would suffer a complete mental collapse if she did not step away. Felicia did not argue. With Darin holding the fort, she felt a small measure of peace, knowing he was genuinely trying to protect Max's interests. She left the office first. The current period was incredibly dangerous, so Darin ordered a security detail to follow her vehicle, ensuring her absolute safety.
Once inside the car, Felicia slumped against the seat, completely exhausted, and unknowingly drifted off to sleep. Suddenly, the driver slammed on the brakes.
The violent inertia threw Felicia forward, jarring her completely awake. Her heart leapt into her throat. "What is happening?"
"Get down, ma'am!" the driver shouted, reacting instantly. He reached back and shoved her down toward the floorboard.
Understanding the peril, Felicia scrambled to make herself as small as possible on the floor. A second later, the sharp, deafening crack of gunfire erupted outside. The car was equipped with bulletproof glass, preventing the bullets from penetrating the cabin. Noticing that Felicia was safe, the driver swiftly returned to the wheel, slammed his foot on the gas, and sped away while the two escort vehicles moved to block the attackers.
Crouched on the floor, Felicia's nerves were stretched to their absolute limit as the car weaved erratically through the avenue. The deafening sound of metal colliding echoed around them as cars crashed. Felicia covered her mouth, her mind completely blank. A violent wave of nausea churned in her stomach, and tears pricked the corners of her eyes as she desperately fought the urge to be sick.
After what felt like an eternity, the vehicle's erratic movements finally smoothed out.
