The woman took the camera and reviewed the pictures. "Thank you, these are wonderful!" she said gratefully.
"You are welcome," Felicia replied gently.
Just as she turned to walk back, the woman suddenly spoke up. "Would you like me to take a picture of your family? You guys look even better than movie stars. Your husband is so handsome, and your daughter is absolutely adorable."
A polite smile graced Felicia's lips as she instinctively prepared to decline. But her voice hitched in her throat. She glanced sideways at Max, then looked down at Anne.
Anne was simply staring at her, not demanding a photo like she usually would, but the bright anticipation in her eyes was impossible to hide.
A sudden, indescribable surge of emotion swelled in Felicia's chest. She looked back up at Max. "Let's take one, then."
"Alright," Max agreed easily.
Felicia pulled out her own phone, opened the camera app, and handed it to the woman.
"Anne, come here."
Anne trotted over to her mother. Felicia took her hand and guided her to the spot where the other family had just posed.
"I want Daddy to hold me too," Anne declared, reaching her arms up toward Max.
Max bent down, scooped her up, and stepped right next to Felicia.
The woman held up the phone, framing the family in the shot. Though they looked picture-perfect on the surface, there was an unmistakable distance between the man and the woman. The intimate warmth typical of a family was glaringly absent.
She snapped a few photos.
"All done."
Felicia walked over, and the woman handed the phone back. "You guys are so gorgeous, though I have to say, the camera doesn't even do you justice."
Felicia glanced at the photos and murmured a thank you.
The family of three then continued their walk.
Felicia handed the phone to her daughter. "Take a look at the pictures, Anne."
When the elevator doors opened on their floor, Max stepped out, paused, and looked down at his daughter. "Still not going to tell me?"
Anne finally spoke, her voice small. "Grandma said Mommy and Daddy won't be happy together."
Max frowned deeply. "That is between Mommy and Daddy. How would Grandma know? Stop overthinking things, Anne."
Anne fell silent again.
Max carried her back to the hospital room, where Tatiana was just about to call him.
"You are back," Tatiana noted.
Max handed Anne over to the nanny to get washed up.
Only he and his mother remained in the room.
Max looked at her, his tone stern. "Mom, didn't I tell you not to discuss Felicia and me with Anne? She is already worried about her great-grandfather. Why would you say these things to her?"
