Luke stepped forward and scooped Anne up, giving her a warm hug.
At the same time, a figure stood concealed behind a stone pillar on the second floor. Darin kept his peripheral vision focused on the scene below. Hearing Anne cheerfully call out to her uncles left an indescribable, bitter taste in his mouth, but for now, all he could do was stand there and watch.
Ava's sole purpose for coming was to take Felicia home immediately. Although she still didn't know exactly what had happened to Felicia, she had asked Greg earlier, and when he refused to speak, she decided to stop pressing for answers.
"Felicia, come home with me," Ava said, gripping Felicia's hand tightly.
Felicia didn't hesitate to agree, but as she looked over and saw Anne staring at her, she paused. Walking over to Luke, she reached out to hold the small hand of the daughter resting in his arms. "Anne, I’m going to go home with Grandma first."
Anne's little mouth formed a pout, her expression turning pitiful as she reached out, wanting her mother to hold her.
"I don’t have the strength to hold you right now, Anne," Felicia explained softly.
Luke gently set the little girl down. Felicia slowly crouched to her level, and Anne immediately wrapped her arms around her mother's neck, her big eyes looking back at her father.
Max stepped up beside them. "Anne, let Mommy go home first."
"Daddy," Anne whimpered, extremely reluctant to see her mother leave.
"Mommy is just going home," Max reassured her. Finally, Anne let go of her mother.
Luke was just about to help Felicia up when he saw Max bending down to offer his hand. Luke stopped his movement. Felicia stood up and raised her eyes to look at Max. Their eyes locked, but Max said nothing more. He simply instructed the staff to pack Felicia's belongings, and the jewelry he had bought for her the day before was handed over to Greg to carry.
