That night, Felicia did not experience the uncontrollable symptoms she had over the past few nights. She only woke up halfway through the night without any severe reactions. As she threw off the covers to get out of bed, the man beside her woke up. Max looked at her, sitting up to ask where she was going.
"To the bathroom," Felicia answered in a normal tone.
Max simply watched her go. When she returned to the room, she saw him leaning against the headboard, waiting for her. She walked over, pulled back the covers, and lay down again.
Max turned on his side and pressed close behind her. "I can't sleep. Do you want to watch a movie?" he offered, trying to distract her.
"I don't want to," Felicia replied.
Max didn't force the issue. "Then let's talk for a bit."
Felicia remained silent. Max didn't push her to speak either, knowing they didn't seem to have many common topics to discuss. He just held her like that. The room was so quiet that only the sound of their breathing filled the air.
After an unknown amount of time, Felicia finally spoke. "Max."
"Hmm?"
"You don't have to keep staying by my side like this," she murmured.
Max slowly opened his eyes. "If I don't stay by your side, who will?"
Felicia had nothing more to say. The minutes and seconds ticked by. She couldn't fall asleep, but she could clearly feel that the man behind her had already drifted off, his breathing growing exceptionally deep and steady.
The next day, bright sunlight streamed through the windows, illuminating the room where the lights had been left on. The man on the large bed fluttered his eyelashes and opened his eyes. Once his mind cleared, he turned to check the spot beside him, finding the woman already gone. He rested for a moment before throwing off the covers and getting out of bed. After a quick wash, he opened the door and walked out. Before he even reached the living room, he heard Anne and Felicia talking.
