“I really don’t want to hear that name, but since you brought it up, I’ll listen.”
Savannah leaned in a little. “I heard the Curtis family is finding Andrea a new match.”
Felicia didn’t seem surprised. Everyone knew Andrea couldn’t marry into the Hawthorne family anymore. The Curtis family would have to pick someone else for her, and Andrea’s marriage was too valuable for them to settle for anyone ordinary. Whoever it was, the family would have to be on par with their own.
She thought for a moment, remembering their run-in in Santa Monica before the New Year. There was no way Andrea was over Max. She wondered what Max would think if he knew someone else was lined up for her.
“So, who’s the lucky guy?” Felicia asked, raising an eyebrow.
Savannah shrugged. “No idea. I’m just as curious as you are.”
Work had been easy. No late nights, no surprise reports to finish. At five-thirty, Felicia had pack up, head home, and still have plenty of time for her studies and the gym. The steady routine felt good—almost like breathing fresh air every day.
Next week, though, things were going to pick up again. She and Jeremy were flying out to Northwick for a branch office project. There was still follow-up to do on last year’s agreement with the Curtis family.
She spotted a headline as she scrolled through her phone. The Lisbon family business had been hit hard before the New Year, smacked with a two-billion-dollar fine. They’d cooperated with the authorities and paid up, but the losses stung. The family had just barely managed to hang on. Now everything depended on the next few months. If they didn’t turn things around, they were finished.
Felicia barely skimmed the article and didn’t bother reading any more.
A notification popped up from Anne. Anne messaged her or tried to video call every single day. She and her family were coming back this Friday, and school would start for her the following Monday. Sometimes Max texted Felicia, wanting to check in and see how she was doing.
Later in the afternoon, Felicia’s phone buzzed with a call from a number she didn’t recognize.
She picked up. “Hello? Who is this?”
A gentle, older voice replied, polite and careful. “Ms. Ross? This is the Hawthorne family butler.”
