Anne looked up and said, “Daddy, why don’t you just call Mommy and ask her yourself?”
“Alright, I get it,” Max replied.
He ended the call and stared at his phone for a while. Eventually, he opened his chat with Felicia and typed, When are you bringing Anne back?
His finger hovered over the send button for a second before he finally pressed it. The message went out, but there was no reply. It felt like throwing a pebble into a well and waiting for a sound that never came.
The maid was standing nearby. She noticed the change in Max’s expression and quietly slipped out of the study.
Felicia saw the message come in from Max but chose to ignore it. She didn’t respond, and Max didn’t send anything else.
After dinner, Felicia took Anne back to Oakridge Estate. She’d decided they would stay there for the night. It was already nine by the time they headed upstairs.
As soon as they walked into the bedroom, Anne asked, “Mommy, did Daddy call you today?”
Felicia kicked off her shoes and answered, “Why do you ask?”
Anne pouted, her words muffled. “I feel like you and Daddy had a fight. Did you?”
Felicia took Anne’s hand and gave it a gentle squeeze. “We didn’t fight, sweetheart. Don’t worry about it.”
But Anne was convinced. No matter what Mommy said, she could tell something wasn’t right.
After washing up, Anne got into bed. Then she insisted she was hungry for chips, asking her mom to make some.
They were out of chips.
Felicia had no choice but to head downstairs to Jeremy’s place to see if she could borrow some.
“You be good while I’m gone, okay? I’ll be right back,” Felicia said.
“Go ahead, Mommy. I’ll be good,” Anne promised.
As soon as Felicia left, Anne grabbed her own phone and called her dad. Max answered almost immediately.
“Anne,” he said softly.
“Daddy, did you even call Mommy?” Anne asked, her little voice full of accusation.
