Sydney spoke up. “Let’s take care of that cut first. You don’t want a scar.”
Max’s gaze lingered on the blood at Felicia’s hairline, eyes dark and steady. He said only, “Five minutes.” The words were short, but nobody doubted he meant every one.
Dannie nodded, then quietly led Carol out of the room. Henry followed behind.
Max glanced at the first aid kit on the coffee table, then noticed the gauze in Felicia’s hand. He gently helped her sit down. “Did you hurt your hand too?”
Sydney jumped in, explaining what happened and apologizing to Felicia.
While she talked, she kept sneaking looks at Max, trying to read his face.
He might seem friendly enough at parties, but everyone knew Max didn’t care about appearances. If you crossed him, there was no saving it, and that made people extra careful around him.
Right now, Max’s face gave nothing away. Sydney’s nerves buzzed in the silence.
Max took out some antiseptic and a cotton swab, dipping it carefully before he finally spoke. “Sydney, keep out of this. Whoever messed up needs to own it.”
Sydney let out a quiet sigh. She knew there was no point arguing, so she just nodded and kept quiet.
Max turned his attention to Felicia, cleaning the cut on her forehead with gentle hands.
Darin stood nearby, watching without a word, his face unreadable.
Sydney glanced at the three of them, a strange feeling twisting in her chest.
She stepped out of the side room, only to bump into Cian in the hall. He took one look at her face and frowned. “Hey, what’s wrong?”
Sydney grabbed his arm, pulling him into a quiet corner. She lowered her voice. “Come here, I need to talk to you.”
Once they were away from the others, Cian asked, “What happened?”
Sydney filled him in, telling him about Darin’s attitude toward Felicia and how she couldn’t shake the weird vibe between Evelynn and Max.
Cian listened, thoughtful. “Yeah, that does sound off.”
