Felicia looked up at him, her eyebrows drawn tight. “Max, did you forget what we agreed on? You don’t get to control my life.”
Max’s voice was calm, but there was steel behind it. “This isn’t just about your freedom. You’re married now. Jeremy has his own family who can take care of him. If you feel like you owe him, let me handle it for you.”
She crossed her arms, her eyes darkening. “No, Max. This is my responsibility. I don’t need you to do anything for me.”
He stepped closer. “Your responsibilities are mine too, now.”
Felicia shook her head, her patience wearing thin. “I’m warning you, Max. Stay out of it.”
Before Max could answer, another voice broke the tension.
“What’s going on here?”
Felicia looked away, her jaw tight. Max turned and saw Darin coming down the hallway toward them.
Darin stopped in front of them, glancing at Felicia’s troubled face. “Is Mr. Milman awake?”
Felicia barely looked at him. She just turned and went back into the hospital room without a word.
Darin watched her go, then turned to Max. “Jeremy got hurt because of Felicia. It’s only fair she takes care of him. Maybe you’re being a little too hard on her.”
He hadn’t heard everything, but it wasn’t hard to guess what was happening.
Max’s expression didn’t soften at all. He didn’t bother answering. “I have somewhere to be.”
He walked off, his back straight and unyielding.
Darin watched until Max disappeared, then headed for Jeremy’s room. He knocked before stepping inside.
Jeremy looked up, not surprised to see him.
Darin’s eyes flicked over to Felicia, who was out on the balcony with her phone. He set a small gift on the coffee table, then approached the bed. “How are you feeling?”
