Ava welcomed him with a warm smile.
“He didn’t spend the holidays at home?”
Felicia didn’t bother to explain that he’d practically been scared away. She knew Jeremy would be in the Capital this morning, and since he was on his own, she figured it would be nice to invite him over for lunch.
The whole family lounged in the living room, half-watching the TV, half-chatting about nothing in particular.
No one brought up the fact that Darin had come by yesterday. It was as if it had never happened. Colton had planned to talk to Felicia about it when she got home, but Darin had messaged him last night, asking him not to mention anything to his sister for now.
Ava didn’t want Felicia to know about Darin either.
Colton understood. With Yvonne in the picture, things were already complicated. He had to admit, he’d once hoped Max would marry into Miss Curtis, which would have made it easier for Felicia to divorce him. But now Max was refusing to get divorced, and from the way he was acting, it seemed like he wanted to make things right with their family. Colton didn’t buy it, so he decided not to bring up Darin at all.
At twelve thirty, Jeremy showed up at the Ross house, arms full of gifts.
Ava hurried over to greet him.
“You didn’t have to bring anything. Your company is enough.”
Jeremy grinned. “It’s tradition. I couldn’t come empty-handed.”
Colton stepped up to take the bags from him. “Come on, go wash up. Lunch is ready.”
Jeremy handed everything to Colton and glanced over at Felicia. She smiled at him, gentle and warm. “Let’s eat first.”
Jeremy nodded, his eyes crinkling in a smile.
Anne spotted him and called out, “Hello, Uncle Jeremy.”
Jeremy ran a hand over her hair, fond and light. “Hi, Anne.” He pulled a giftbox from his pocket. “Happy New Year, sweetheart.”
