“Greg is Ava’s son,” Colton said. “His company needed him this morning, so he headed out, but he’ll be back later. You’ll get to meet him. He’s a really ambitious, hardworking kid, and he treats your sister well.”
Colton talked about Greg like he was his own. He was still playing with the baby and didn’t notice how much Darin’s expression had changed.
When Darin didn’t say anything, Colton finally looked up. “Darin, are you okay?”
Darin blinked, snapping out of his shock. He managed a weak smile. “It’s… nothing. Really.”
For a second, his mind went blank. His heart hammered in his chest, leaving him breathless. It felt like his blood was running backwards, and his fingers started to tremble. The words he wanted to say just wouldn’t come out.
Outside, the gray morning finally gave way to falling snow.
The Hawthorne family’s estate was decked out today, looking extra festive.
Luxury cars kept arriving, one after another, pulling into the underground garage.
The Gilbert family had come over for dinner.
Max’s car rolled to a stop. A valet came over and opened the door.
Felicia got out first.
She was wearing a stunning red coat over a white cashmere dress, pearls at her neck and ears. She looked elegant and put-together, like someone born to grace a room. Her heels clicked on the floor, but the heated garage made the cold easy to forget.
She helped little Anne out of the car, holding her hand.
Anne wore a pretty red dress that matched her mom’s. Together, they looked like the perfect mother-daughter duo.
Max was waiting for them at the front of the car. He wore a tailored suit with gold embroidery, standing tall and composed. His good looks and confident posture gave him the air of someone who grew up in a distinguished family.
He watched Felicia and Anne with a soft look that made them seem like a picture-perfect family.
“Max!”
