Felicia didn’t go home for the next two days.
Work was chaos, as it always was at the end of the year. The CoreTech project had been scrapped, a new opportunity was already on the table, and everyone in the team was working late, chasing that year-end bonus. There was no way she could afford to slow down.
But there was another reason too. She still needed to quietly dig into the TC Project. With billions at stake, it was almost impossible to resist that kind of money.
Max was really letting this one go, which made no sense. Walking away would cost him a fortune. The project involved AI tech, and if Greenway Electrical Services landed it, Greg would easily blow past the targets in his contract. Greenway's value would soar.
But when it came to Max, nothing was ever simple. She couldn’t risk making a wrong move with him.
On the third day, Max called.
“Have you decided yet?” he asked. “This project isn’t going to wait.”
“Are you at the office?” she asked.
“I’m home with Anne. She had a fever last night. It’s gone down now, but she’s still out of sorts.”
Felicia’s heart tightened. At that moment, Mason walked in with a file for her to sign. She gave him a few instructions, grabbed her things, and left for Oakridge Estate.
When she arrived, Max was in the living room with Anne. The little girl had a fever patch on her forehead and looked tired, curled up in her dad’s lap. The second she saw Felicia, she reached out.
“Mommy.” The word was barely a whisper.
Felicia scooped Anne up, her chest aching as she felt how limp her daughter was.
They sat together, watching cartoons. Anne fell asleep against Felicia in no time.
Max carried Anne upstairs to her room. After making sure she was settled, he came back down.
Felicia was waiting for him on the sofa.
He sat across from her.
