“Is that so?” Holden grinned. “Alright, I’ll be watching to see how it all plays out.”
“I wonder if Max will really do something about Andrea for Evelynn’s sake. Sometimes the ones who look the innocent are the most ruthless.”
Andrea was Darin’s cherished sister. Now that he didn’t seem ready to divorce Evelynn, who would he pick if it really came down to it?
“Well, it’s enough to keep him on edge for now. Any word from Darin?”
The investigation into Darin’s past had stalled. Someone was blocking their efforts, and Holden was pretty sure it was Max. His influence in the Capital was no joke.
He’d tried to get Andrea to talk, but she was careful, which only made it more obvious that Darin had secrets.
“Nothing yet. We’re going to need more time.”

Felicia had no idea how long she’d been out. When she finally came to, her head was pounding and her body felt heavy. She blinked up at the ceiling, trying to get her bearings.
Before she could figure out what had happened, Anne’s little voice called out, “Mommy!”
Felicia’s vision slowly sharpened. She turned her head and saw Anne’s worried face right beside her.
“Mommy, you’re awake! Does it still hurt anywhere? I can rub it for you.”
They were back at Oakridge Estate, in Anne’s room.
Felicia lifted her hand weakly, brushing Anne’s cheek. Her voice was barely there, but she tried to smile. “I’m okay.”
The pain that had felt like being eaten alive was gone, but her whole body felt drained.
Right now, she just really needed to use the bathroom.
She pushed herself up, slow and shaky. Anne tried to help, but she was still so little.
“Daddy!” Anne called.
Almost instantly, Max walked in. He saw Felicia struggling to sit up and seemed to get what she needed. He crossed the room, scooped her into his arms, and held her close.
