He set his phone down. For a couple of seconds, he stood there in silence, his face serious. Then he turned to the CoreTech team, and the intensity in his eyes made everyone freeze.
“Mr. Hawthorne, is something wrong?” someone asked, their voice hesitant.
Max didn’t answer. He was focused on the assistant standing behind Mr. Torres. The second Max looked his way, the assistant’s eyes dropped, guilt written all over his face. Max noticed it immediately.
He strode over and stopped right in front of him, his voice quiet but threatening. “Did you send Roen Capital the location?”
The assistant’s job was to handle all the details about the meeting spot. Now he looked like he might collapse, his face drained of color. He couldn’t bring himself to look at Max, and his words came out shaky. “Y... yes.”
Max’s eyes narrowed. “Where are they now?”
Mr. Torres finally figured it out. No wonder their contacts had never shown up. His expression darkened as he glared at his assistant.
On his way to the hotel across the street, Max’s phone rang. It was Andrea. He didn’t pick up. She sent a message instead: Max, my head is killing me all of a sudden.
He still didn’t reply.
Andrea had just found out her brother moved the deal to BlueMarble Investments. No one had told her anything. She didn’t know what Max was planning and the thought of what it might mean sent her running to BlueMarble to find him, but he wasn’t there. His secretary just shrugged and said, “No idea, I heard he went to meet someone from CoreTech.”
A cold panic settled in Andrea’s chest. Max wasn’t answering her calls or texts. That only made her more scared. She grabbed her phone and called Trey.
