Felicia slid her gaze away, landing on Anne. “Let’s talk about it later,” she said.
Max didn’t push. “If you change your mind, just let me know.”
Felicia stayed silent.
“Mom!” Anne’s voice rang out, full of excitement. She dashed over, waving something in her hands. “Mom, look how pretty this is!”
She held a luxurious box high for Felicia to see.
Felicia peeked inside and found a necklace sparkling with sapphires and diamonds, each stone shining with a fire that caught her breath.
She couldn’t help but be dazzled by how beautiful it was.
She’d seen this necklace before, though only in a photo Heather had sent her. That day, Heather was flipping through a jewelry magazine and sent her the picture right away. Felicia had been just as stunned the first time she saw it. That image had stuck with her ever since.
The price was unforgettable too—thirty million dollars. It was a one-of-a-kind Kashmir sapphire piece, made over two years by a top master jeweler. There was nothing else like it in the world.
Seeing it now, up close, was even more stunning than she’d imagined.
Heather had tried to buy it once, but it was already spoken for.
Felicia never expected to see it in real life, much less right in front of her.
Max watched the way her eyes changed and a small smile played at his lips. “Do you like it?”
Felicia pulled herself together and watched him, but before she could say anything, Anne bounced on her toes. “Let me put it on you, Mom!”
Felicia took the velvet box and shut it gently. “That’s enough, Anne. I’m not wearing it. It’s far too expensive. Your father can keep it.”
Anne pouted. “Just for a second, Mom. Please?”
Felicia only smiled and didn’t answer. “Anne, go upstairs for a bit. I need to talk to your dad.”
Anne glanced hopefully at Max.
