Felicia sat on the sofa and pulled Anne into her arms. “I have to leave for work overseas tomorrow, too.”
Anne’s eyes went wide. That sparkle she always had faded right in front of Felicia. “You arealways so busy.”
The sadness in Anne’s voice stung Felicia’s heart. Her own voice came out tight. “I’m sorry, Anne.”
Anne looked up at her. “When will you be back?”
Felicia shook her head. “I’m not sure yet. But if you miss me, you can always call or video chat. Anytime you want.”
Anne suddenly dropped her head and went quiet.
Felicia gently lifted her onto her lap, brushing her fingers over Anne’s cheek. “What’s wrong, sweetheart?”
She noticed Anne’s eyes were red. Something squeezed in Felicia’s chest. “Anne?”
Anne wiped her eyes, her voice catching. “I’m sorry. I don’t want to cry. It’s just… if I can’t see you, I feel really sad.”
Felicia’s heart twisted at the sound of Anne’s little sobs. She wiped the tears from Anne’s face. “Hey, it’s okay. I’m not leaving forever, just for work. I promise I’ll come back. Don’t cry, all right?”
Anne looked at her, hope flickering in her eyes. “Will you send me a message every day?”
“Of course. No matter how busy I get, I’ll always send you a message.”
“And you’ll come back as soon as you can?”
“The second I finish work, I’ll come straight home to see you.”
Felicia did everything she could to comfort Anne, all the while worrying about her heart. But Anne seemed okay, her face normal.
