The day before Max and Felicia were scheduled to depart for Australia, they hosted a dinner party at Oakridge Estate. Darin and Greg attended. Felicia had called Ivy to invite her as well, but Clarence had been unexpectedly hospitalized. Ivy had to stay at the hospital to take care of her grandfather, so she could not make it. Luke had returned to the Capital recently but had flown back to Boston a few days prior.
The group gathered in the well-heated conservatory, enjoying a warm barbecue meal.
"Just by looking at your belly, Felicia, anyone can tell you are having a boy," Heather remarked.
Felicia, dressed in a loose knit cardigan that barely concealed her pronounced bump, paused while eating a piece of beef Max had just cut for her. "Is there really a science to that?"
"Usually, when it is a boy, the bump sits a lot tighter and more compact. That is how it was for my cousins, anyway. With girls, the belly tends to look much wider," Heather explained.
"I see," Felicia noted.
Savannah chimed in. "That is not always true. When my cousin was pregnant with my niece, her bump was tiny. Everyone swore she was having a boy, but she had a girl in the end."
"Well, there are always exceptions," Heather conceded. "But you need to hurry up and have one yourself, Savannah. Felicia is already on her second."
Savannah grabbed a piece of meat from her bowl and shoved it right into Heather's mouth. "I have never seen anyone skip the 'when are you getting married' phase and jump straight to pressuring me about babies. Not even my parents are this desperate."
Felicia could not help but laugh.
The conversation, of course, was perfectly audible to everyone else at the table. Max shot Darin a look, picked up his wine glass, and clinked it against Darin's. "You really should hurry up."
Hearing Max's comment, Savannah carefully watched Darin's reaction. He did not bat an eye, simply responding, "You should just focus on taking care of Felicia until the baby is born."
It was exactly the kind of answer Savannah expected. Over the past couple of months, whenever she asked him out for movies or shopping, Darin always agreed. Neither of them ever explicitly defined their relationship, letting things progress naturally. It was fine by her, especially since Darin had never been the type to whisper sweet nothings. She knew that his current acceptance of her was largely because Felicia's life was finally settling down. Any talk of marriage for him would undoubtedly have to wait until after Felicia had her own wedding. He was, undeniably, stepping up as a responsible older brother.
