With those parting words, Jeffrey turns and walks back inside. Max narrows his dark eyes at the retreating figure before turning to get into his car.
Back in the living room, Clarence watches Jeffrey until he takes a seat on the sofa. "Tell me, what exactly is going on?"
"He crossed the line first, so he shouldn't blame me for retaliating," Jeffrey states calmly.
Clarence's expression darkens, and he lets out a weary sigh. "Do not make things ugly with the Hawthorne family."
Comparing the current state of their family to the Hawthornes and the Gilberts always brings Clarence a profound sense of sorrow. If Jeffrey's father hadn't died in that tragic accident, the Manning family wouldn't be this desolate. When he eventually passes, there will hardly be anyone left to serve as pallbearers.
"I know what I am doing," Jeffrey assures him.
Clarence says no more, and Jeffrey gently helps him back to his room to rest.
On the way to his own family estate, Max receives a call from Miranda. He briefly checks in with Anne before heading over.
Miranda is waiting for him in the living room. "Come take a seat," she greets him as he enters.
Max walks over and takes a seat across from her. She starts with pleasantries, asking if work has been busy, to which Max replies that it has. He then asks why she called him over.
Miranda doesn't beat around the bush anymore. "I have heard some things regarding the Manning family. This is their internal affair, Max, and I hope you will not interfere."
She no longer involves herself in the business decisions made by Max or Daniel. However, ever since Max's accident and her husband's passing, she has acutely felt her advancing age. Realizing her years are numbered, she has come to value nothing more than her family's safety and unity. Clarence had called her just moments ago, and she fully sympathizes with the immense burdens he has carried all these years.
"As long as Jeffrey doesn't cross the line, I will stay out of it. However, he has already taken Felicia," Max replies.
