Max had just arrived home. Anne was exhausted from playing and was dozing off on Darin's shoulder. Max stepped forward and took her into his arms. He looked at Darin with a faint smirk. "So, how did it feel taking care of a child today?"
"If you want me to be jealous, just say it directly," Darin replied.
Max's lips curved into a slight smile. "I'm not quite that bored."
Darin did not linger any longer and turned to leave.
That night, Felicia had a dream. She dreamed of a beautiful little boy waving at her endlessly. She wanted to run over and pick him up, but no matter how fast she ran, she could never reach him. Panic set in completely. She ran forward desperately, but her legs felt like lead. She could not move fast enough, and eventually, the little boy's silhouette faded away until he disappeared completely from her sight.
Felicia jolted awake, her hand instinctively flying to her flat stomach. Her body felt fine, with no signs of distress. She let out a long breath, her racing heart slowly settling down. Recalling the nightmare, she figured it was just her intense anxiety and fear manifesting as a bad dream.
No matter what, she wanted to keep the baby. She refused to let any harm come to her child. In another half month, she would go in for a checkup, and shey prayed everything would go smoothly.
For the next two days, Felicia did not leave the house, choosing instead to rest and take care of her health. Given how early she was in her pregnancy, there were no visible signs on her body. Without Anne by her side for two days, she suddenly felt entirely out of sorts. Max texted her every day, asking mundane questions like whether she had eaten or slept well.
On the third day, Ava's family had a wedding to attend. Ava and Colton left at nine in the morning with little Sean. The drive would take over two hours, so Felicia decided not to tag along. She spent the morning alone at home. She had just finished lunch and was sitting in the living room watching television when the maid approached.
"Miss, there is someone here to see you," the maid announced.
Felicia looked puzzled. "Who is it?"
She instinctively assumed it was Max, but it made no sense for him to visit at this hour. Besides, if it were him, he would never wait politely outside. He would have barged right in.
"He said his surname is Manning," the maid clarified.
Stunned, Felicia quickly replied, "Let him in."
