Anne leaned against her father as she happily ate her cake.
"Anne, you can stay with Uncle Darin for a bit," Max announced.
Hearing this, Felicia frowned and stared at the man across from her. Anne looked at her father with wide, round eyes, instantly understanding the situation. She nodded in agreement. "Okay."
Max turned his attention to Darin. "I'm giving you an opportunity. Experience what it's really like to take care of a child."
"Am I supposed to thank you for this?" Darin asked dryly.
Before Max could reply, Anne looked up at Darin, blinking her large eyes. "Do you not want to take care of me, Uncle Darin?" she mumbled.
Darin felt his heart melt instantly. He reached out, pulling Anne gently to his side, and comforted her in a soft voice. "That's not what I meant at all. I would love to hang out with you."
He truly felt the heavens were unfair. Why did a man like Max get to have such a beautiful, well-behaved daughter? It seemed Max always managed to reap all the benefits in life.
Eventually, Anne left with Darin. She waved her little hand at her parents. "Bye-bye, Mommy and Daddy."
"Listen to him," Max instructed.
Anne nodded earnestly. "I will be a good girl."
Darin took her hand, and the two walked away together. Max watched them leave before turning back to Felicia. "Let's go too."
"Where to?" Felicia asked.
"You'll see when we get there," Max replied.
Half an hour later, they arrived at White Cloud Cathedral. Max had come to draw a blessing card. When he consulted the priest earlier, he had drawn a card of moderate fortune. He stared at the classical scripture written on the card.
"Can you even read that?" Felicia could not help but ask.
