For the next two days, Felicia stayed at Amber's house to keep Anne company. When the wake finally ended and the day of the burial arrived, Felicia brought Anne to the memorial hall early in the morning, accompanying the Gilbert family. The moment Anne spotted her father, she immediately ran toward him.
"Daddy," Anne called out.
Max bent down and scooped Anne into his arms, holding her close. He whispered soothing words of comfort into her ear, and Anne nodded, resting her little head against his shoulder. Max then gently set her back down. Felicia took Anne by the hand and stood quietly behind him, waiting for the priest to announce the procession.
When the time came, the coffin was carried out of the hall. The Hawthorne and Gilbert families followed closely behind. The sound of quiet weeping echoed through the crowd, and an atmosphere of profound sorrow filled the space. They traveled by car to the cemetery. By eleven o'clock, the burial was complete, and the mourners began to disperse.
Max carried Anne down the cemetery steps, with Felicia following closely behind. When they returned to the memorial hall, the staff had already begun dismantling the arrangements. After lunch, the remaining guests slowly said their goodbyes to the two families and departed.
Inside the lounge, Anne dozed off, leaning heavily against Felicia. Felicia carefully laid her down on the sofa, draped a soft blanket over her, and sat beside her to keep watch. Amber and Mandy peeked in briefly, but seeing Anne asleep, they quietly retreated. A moment later, the door opened again, and Max walked in.
Felicia looked up at him. He clearly had not slept in days. His eyes were swollen, with dark, bruised circles completely visible beneath them. Stubble shadowed his jawline, and his entire demeanor radiated absolute exhaustion and despair. Max glanced at her. Their eyes locked, but neither of them said a word.
Max strode over to Anne and sat down beside the sleeping girl. He stared at her for a moment before carefully gathering her into his arms. As he stood up, his deep, gravelly voice broke the silence. "I will have someone take you home."
