Felicia was jolted awake by her ringing phone. Irritated, she swiped to answer. "Hello?"
Hearing the raw exhaustion in her voice, Darin quickly apologized. "Felicia, were you sleeping? Are you feeling unwell?" It was long past normal napping hours.
"What is it?" she asked flatly.
"Nothing major. Just wanted to see how you're doing."
"If that's all, I'm hanging up," she said, her impatience palpable.
Realizing she was simply grumpy from being woken up, and unable to gauge if she had seen the news, Darin decided not to push it. "Get some rest, Felicia."
The call ended. Felicia lay in bed with her eyes closed, but sleep had abandoned her entirely. Sighing, she threw off the covers and headed to the bathroom to freshen up.
Later that evening, Jeremy called. The corporate headquarters was hosting their standard executive conference, and all branch directors were required to present their reports in the Capital. It meant she had to fly back. She certainly wasn't going to demand special treatment, so she agreed. After wrapping up the professional details, Jeremy didn't linger on personal matters. Felicia booked a flight for the day after tomorrow and informed Anne.
The next afternoon, while assigning tasks to her assistant, Felicia received a call from Anne.
"What is it, sweetheart?"
A choked, sobbing voice came through the speaker. "Mommy, Grandma says Great-Grandpa wants to see me one last time. I can't fly back to the Capital with you anymore."
Hearing Anne cry made Felicia's chest tighten painfully. She wanted to comfort her, but the words caught in her throat. It seemed Brysen truly was at the end of his life. Since Anne wore a smartwatch with a built-in tracker, it was no surprise the Hawthorne family had easily located her.
"It's okay, sweetheart. Go back and spend time with Great-Grandpa," Felicia said softly.
Anne let out a tearful sniffle and agreed.
After hanging up, Felicia sat in absolute silence for a long time.
"Are you alright, Evelynn?" her assistant asked with concern.
