Tang Yueshan went with him to the place where the Zhang Family was giving birth—it was a small rock cave at least a hundred feet away from here, originally used for storage.
The Zhang Family lay on a stretcher flat on the ground.
The old woman wasn’t a midwife, but compared to men, she had some experience with childbirth.
She stayed inside to assist with the birth, while Shangguan Qing and the others all waited outside the cave.
"Do you have wood?" the old woman asked as she came out.
"What size?" Shangguan Qing asked.
The old woman replied, "Not too big, just enough for her to bite on so she doesn’t make too much noise or hurt herself."
Shangguan Qing pulled out the wooden stopper from the water pouch: "Will this do?"
The old woman shook her head: "This won’t work."
"How about this?" Shangguan Qing then pulled out the wooden hairpin from his head.
The old woman shook her head again: "That won’t work either."
Shangguan Qing hesitated for a moment, then took out a very old small wooden dagger from his pocket and handed it to the old woman.
The old woman smiled, "This should do nicely."
With that, she turned around with the dagger and went back into the small cave.
Tang Yueshan noticed a fleeting look of melancholy in Shangguan Qing’s expression.
Was that small wooden dagger a cherished item?
But it didn’t look expensive. If he liked, once he was his godson, he would carve ten or eight of them for him!
Zhang’s labor pains started during the day, and now the cervix was fully dilated, but she couldn’t give birth.
"Oh dear, this doesn’t look good..."
The old woman came out anxiously and said to Shangguan Qing, "Zhang is having a difficult labor..."
Women giving birth are crossing through Ghost Gate Pass, and facing a difficult labor could mean a double tragedy.
Tang Yueshan punched his palm and muttered, "If only that girl were here!"
"What’s wrong?"
A familiar young voice suddenly emerged from the other end of the tunnel, and two ghost soldiers quickly went on alert.
"It’s me."
Gu Jiao said.
Shangguan Qing waved, and the two ghost soldiers stepped aside.
Gu Jiao pushed open a secret door and crawled out from inside.
She patted the dust off herself and said quietly, "This place is really hard to find."
Shangguan Qing looked at her suspiciously: "You came from Back Mountain?"
Gu Jiao said, "Otherwise, would it be from a Jin army barracks?"
Shangguan Qing couldn’t hide his surprise: "There’s also a tunnel in Back Mountain? And it connects here?"
