Charlotte listened to the busy tone on the other end, then shot Anthony an innocent look and batted her eyelashes. “Did I say something wrong?”
“Nope.” Anthony, who had just been called amazing, walked over with a grin. He brushed a stray lock of hair from her forehead and smiled even wider. “Your boyfriend really is that impressive.”
Were they even talking about the same thing? Charlotte pursed her lips and looked up at the cloudy sky, her tone casual. “My mentor is such a ruthless old man.”
“Yeah, totally heartless,” Anthony said, amused by how cute she looked. He tugged her loose jacket a little closer around her shoulders. “Looks like it’s about to rain. Visibility will be bad, so flying isn’t a good idea.”
Plus, the whole Isle of Veil was under lockdown. Taking off now would be risky. Charlotte’s mentor probably knew that, which was why he’d said no.
Honestly, being Charlotte’s mentor and surviving all this? That was impressive. Anthony really wanted to meet this old guy with nerves of steel one day.
Right then, Jackson’s voice called out from nearby.
“Charlotte, Newell’s guy just called. There’s supposed to be a huge storm in half an hour. It’s not safe to fly.”
“He said you and Anthony should stay on the Isle of Veil tonight. Tomorrow, he’ll arrange a plane to get us out.”
“Why didn’t he call me himself?” Charlotte frowned, asking without much thought.
Jackson hesitated, swallowed, then tried to keep a straight face. “Apparently, Newell wasn’t feeling so great after your last call.” If he picked up the phone again, he might just die from the stress… Yeah, that seemed about right.
Charlotte shrugged and made a face. “So, where are we staying?”
Jackson rubbed his nose, sneaking a glance at Charlotte’s expression. “Newell said…”
“Said what?” Charlotte’s frown deepened.
