“Lottie’s with me. You don’t have to worry.”
Anthony put the vial away and nodded at Franco, respectful but confident. If the Isle of Veil tried anything with Lottie, they’d have to get past X Organization first.
“Lottie’s a lot like her mother. She knows exactly what she likes and what she doesn’t.” Franco’s hands were tucked behind his back as he looked out the window. Across the way, the light was on in Nora’s room, casting a soft glow that made the roses on the windowsill look even brighter.
She really likes him…
Anthony turned those words over in his mind. His eyes grew darker, his lips curling into a gentle, almost indulgent smile. Charlotte had never actually said she liked him, not in so many words. But for someone as cool and reserved as her, the way she leaned on him said it all.
“It’s an honor,” Anthony said quietly, laughter rumbling in his chest.
He couldn’t believe his luck, to have her choose him in this life.
Franco studied Anthony for a moment, eyes full of meaning. “Lottie’s mother still isn’t well. I can’t leave her side right now. I need you to pay extra attention to things for me, on her end.”
When the time was right, he’d tell the world who Lottie really was. His daughter wasn’t some hidden orphan. She was a princess, through and through.
“Of course. We’re family.” Anthony nodded, sounding casual but there was a note of certainty in his voice. The message wasn’t hard to read.
Family?
Franco was caught off guard. He stared at Anthony, almost speechless. Was this guy really trying to worm his way in like that? The nerve.
“By the way, last time in Cabinda, when I was looking for Asclepius, why did you stop me?”
With business out of the way, Franco’s pleasant mood faded. The frustration he’d been holding back just spilled out. If it hadn’t been for Anthony, maybe he would have found Asclepius by now.
“Do you know Asclepius, or are you looking for her too?” Franco’s voice was tense. “Lottie knows medicine, but her mother’s illness is complicated. She might not be able to handle it.”
He still needed Asclepius.
Anthony hesitated, just for a second.
Franco clearly hadn’t figured it out yet. The Charlotte he thought couldn’t save the day was actually Asclepius herself.
