Dr. David’s eyes lit up with a sudden idea. He grinned and said, “Nice weather today. Feels like the perfect time to catch up with Lottie.”
Anthony turned, giving Dr. David a long look before the hint of a helpless smile touched his lips. “Let’s call it a day.” He set his things aside and walked out of the lab.
As Dr. David watched him go, he muttered, “Doesn’t matter how impressive a man is, he’s still a softie when it comes to his wife.”
Anthony climbed into his car, sinking into the back seat. He rubbed his forehead, looking utterly drained. The air in the car felt thick and heavy, almost cold, matching the tension that seemed to cling to him.
“How long has Lottie been gone now?” His voice was quiet, eyes closed as he asked.
He’d been stuck in the lab for days, barely noticing when one day ended and another began.
Hans glanced at him through the rearview mirror, careful and cautious. “Almost five days.”
Five days. That left less than three before Lottie’s deadline ran out.
After all this time, the Hawk family still hadn’t produced the antidote. That only meant two things. Either Aloys didn’t trust Lottie at all, or the antidote was gone for good. Maybe the Hawk family just wanted to lure out the so-called “genetic mutants.”
The things Lottie had brought back from Isle of Veil were more valuable than anyone realized. Given enough time, they’d come up with an antidote themselves.
Anthony asked, “Any updates on the bracelet?”
Everyone suspected the “primer” was hidden inside the bracelet. If they could just get their hands on it, saving everyone would actually be possible.
Hans shook his head, looking frustrated. “Still searching, Anthony.”
Back at the conference center, there had been thousands of people coming and going. No one could say for sure if the bracelet had ended up in the trash or if someone had walked off with it. They’d checked everywhere, but no one had seen a thing.
Anthony pressed his fingers to his brow, voice rough. “Get the plane ready. We’re flying to Isle of Veil tomorrow night.”
