There were just two booklets, but every page was packed with details. Charlotte took them, flipping through as she talked. “The first genetic mutation showed up in a tiny, out-of-the-way town. Over time, it got passed down through families.”
She paused, scanning the next section. “The mutation only goes from mother to daughter, never to sons. Most people with this gene don’t live past thirty.”
“The institute tried to extract the mutated gene and inject it into men, but it didn’t work. Aloys is living proof.” Charlotte glanced at Marcia, giving her a quick, knowing smile.
Marcia’s eyes widened. She hadn’t expected Charlotte to know that. The more she learned, the more mysterious Asclepius seemed.
“Your research is already at the final stage.” Charlotte closed the booklet, set it aside, and opened up the institute’s database on her laptop. After a few taps, she could tell the security was tight. Copying or downloading was impossible for most people. Hacking in? Out of the question.
But Charlotte was not most people.
She had built this system herself. Getting in was as easy as making a cup of coffee.
“The real challenge now is figuring out how the mutation happens and, more importantly, how to suppress it. The antidote is key. With that, you can actually control the people with the mutation.”
Charlotte arched an eyebrow, talking casually as she breezed through the security blocks, right in front of G2 and Marcia. A few moments later, she sent every file in the database to Anthony.
“Asclepius, you’re amazing!” G2 couldn’t help the admiration in his voice.
“I have a question.” Marcia’s gaze lingered on Charlotte, curious and a bit suspicious. “The institute offered a huge reward to find you before. Why agree to work with us now?”
For some reason, she felt like Asclepius looked familiar. It was hard to shake the feeling.
“I didn’t need money before,” Charlotte said with a small, crooked smile. “Now I do.”
There was no arguing with that.
