“Of course it’s true.” Olivia’s lips twisted into a mocking smile, her voice icy. “The paternity test is out. How could that possibly be fake?”

Otherwise, why would Charlotte’s mom leave the Gates family behind and practically pay to marry her dad? Either the money was shady, or Charlotte’s real dad was someone who couldn’t show his face. Olivia was pretty sure it was the second one. Maybe her mom really did break up someone else’s family.

Charlotte’s classmate just stared, not sure what to believe. Charlotte was almost unreal. Gorgeous, top of the class in the entrance exams, and she just seemed to know everything. Genetics worked in weird ways. If Charlotte was that amazing, her mom couldn’t be so bad, right?

“Let’s go inside. I heard the department chair invited Glenn to give a talk today.” The girl forced a laugh, eager to change the subject. She really didn’t want to get into gossip she barely understood.

“What’s the rush?” Olivia scoffed, impatience and annoyance all over her face. “Kingswood University gets a little attention, and suddenly they act like royalty. Compared to Cabinda, they’re not even in the running.”

As she spoke, Olivia’s gaze locked onto two people not far away. Charlotte was leaning against Anthony, head down, probably on her phone. Anthony stood behind her, patient as ever, holding a backpack that didn’t really match, wearing a gentle, doting smile.

After a moment, he leaned closer to Charlotte and whispered something. She turned, then gave him a playful punch in the chest. Anthony caught her hand easily, and instead of getting upset, he brought her fist to his lips and kissed it.

“They’re adorable,” the friend blurted out, unable to help herself. “Olivia, don’t you think they make a good couple?”

Olivia shot her a glare, anger simmering just under the surface.
