It was at that moment that I realized when people felt truly helpless, they'd sometimes end up laughing.
I looked at Abigail and shook my head as I chuckled helplessly.
She frowned at me and asked, "What's so funny?"
I chuckled at myself, then said calmly, "Oh, I'm laughing at myself. I'm laughing at how foolish I was to have ever believed the things you'd said to me."
My words made her expression darken further.
She stared at me coldly and demanded harshly, "What do you mean by that? What exactly have I done to wrong you? Tell me."
I looked into her cold, indifferent eyes and realized that my feelings meant nothing to her. Her reasons for being with me were no longer as simple as they were in the past.
Now, it was all about leveraging my resources to help boost the man she loved.
I sneered and shook my head, then asked in a calm tone, "Abigail, have you ever considered one thing? If I composed a song for Joshua, what kind of vile, humiliating things would his fans and the netizens hurl at me?"
I could clearly see her resolve falter ever so briefly in her eyes. She didn't say a word, but panic and unease flashed through her eyes.
It was obvious she had no idea how to respond to my question.
After all these years, I had seen through her tricks. In her eyes, I was just a pushover that she could have her way with. She would start by threatening me, then once we were home, she would try to sweet-talk me into compliance.
I had seen those tactics way too many times before.
In the past, I could pretend not to care and go along with her charade. But now, I no longer wanted to do so.
All I wanted was to live my own life and to focus on myself.
"Abigail, you don't need to keep trying to explain things to me. We both know what's going on between us. No matter how much you try to explain, it's futile. What's the point of wasting any more time on this?"
