I stared blankly at Abigail, utterly surprised at how much she had changed.
What was going on in her mind right now? Was she trying to scheme against me in another way?
I couldn't figure her out and didn't even know what to think of her now.
Yet, Abigail didn't seem the least bit upset by my lack of reaction. She smiled faintly and said calmly, "Be good. I'll call you when it's time to eat."
She left and headed to the kitchen to cook for me.
I found myself even more baffled as I watched her retreating figure.
What was she trying to do? Why was she acting like this?
She prepared the dishes she was most skilled at. Her cooking was undeniably excellent.
However, I had no appetite. After she insistently made me eat a few pieces of honey-glazed spare ribs, I excused myself and told her I was tired before returning to the room to rest.
Abigail surprisingly didn't press me further for once. I didn't understand why she behaved this way, but her uncharacteristic restraint gave me a strange relief.
I received a call from Hanson the next morning. He told me an urgent task needed his attention, but he didn't dive into the details over the phone. He asked me to come to his office if I was free.
I decided to head to his office since I had nothing else to do.
He quickly looked up at me the moment I pushed open the door. Looking at me with a bright smile, he nodded as he said, "Samuel, you're here! Have a seat!"
When I sat down, he clapped his hands and said to the people outside, "Come in, everyone!"
His words made everyone fall silent. They all lowered their heads without daring to say a word. Everyone knew who he was referring to though no names were mentioned.
Somehow, I instinctively felt they were talking about Joshua.
The boy with glasses extended his hand to me. "Samuel, let me introduce myself. My name is Silas Vance! Our company is so fortunate to have someone as talented as you. That hack of a celebrity, Josh—"
"Ahem! Silas, what are you talking about?" Hanson interrupted Silas with a serious expression before he could say Joshua's name.
"Oh… I'm sorry, Mr. Jigman. That was careless of me." Silas scratched his head awkwardly and let out a few embarrassed chuckles.
I was surprised but found it entirely reasonable. After all, Joshua had no real creative talent yet insisted on building a false image for himself.
It was only a matter of time before it all blew up in his face.
