Without warning, the sea transformed.
Far away, at the edge of the Void Sea, the surface that had been smooth as a mirror suddenly began to churn.
This was no ordinary rise and fall of the tide. A deeper and far more violent power seemed to be surging upward from the lowest reaches of the seabed.
The water roiled as if an invisible hand were stirring it from the bottom of an abyss. Wave upon wave gathered from every direction and raced toward Azurewave Island.
The first swells reached only a few dozen feet and looked no more threatening than wind-ruffled water on a lake.
In the blink of an eye, however, they merged into walls of water hundreds of feet high. Fine ripples covered their surfaces, and blue spiritual light moved faintly within them.
The walls continued to climb, passing roughly 1,100 feet, then 2,200, then 3,300 before finally forming a 330-foot wave that spanned the horizon. Like a blue crystal rampart standing between heaven and earth, it scattered dazzling brilliance beneath the sun.
The sky abruptly darkened.
No clouds had covered the sun. The towering wave itself was simply so immense that it blocked most of the daylight.
A vast shadow stretched from the crest all the way to the island's shore, covering half the city on Azurewave Island in dim gray-blue gloom.
Heavy mist saturated the air. It carried the icy brine of the deep sea, as if the entire Void Sea had compressed a single breath into this one place.
The crowd on the island grew restless. Some people cried out and stumbled backward, their hurried footsteps clattering over the stone pavement.
Others tightened their grips on their magical items as scattered glimmers of spiritual energy lit among them.
Still others stared up at the approaching wave with bloodless faces, their lips moving without sound.
Vendors on the docks abandoned their wares. Adults snatched children from their games in the street and dragged them indoors.
The cultivators who had been arguing only moments earlier now stood frozen with their heads raised and mouths open, like an entire row of statues.
"What in the world is that?"
"A giant wave! It's a giant wave!"
"Impossible! The Void Sea never produces waves that large! Its surface has remained unchanged for 10,000 years. Nothing like this has ever happened!"
"Look at the crest! There are people up there!"
Jared's pupils narrowed.
His gaze pierced the flying spray, the heaving water, and the crystalline curtain cascading from the wave until it reached the crest of the 330-foot wave.
Several figures stood there. Each radiated an aura as calm and immense as the deep ocean.
At their head was a powerfully built middle-aged man with a stern face. His skin was a deep indigo, like water from the lowest depths reflecting moonlight.
His long silver-white hair streamed through the gale like foam torn from a deep-sea current.
A faint layer of watery radiance surrounded him. Countless tiny ripples moved within it, winding and circling his body like living creatures to form a natural barrier.
He carried no magical item. Yet as he stood there, the whole Void Sea seemed to answer every breath he took.
Behind him were five tall Water Clan cultivators, each solemn and sharp-eyed.
Their skin displayed different shades of blue. Some resembled the clear waters of the shallows, while others possessed the dark hue of the deepest sea.
