The Heart Left Behind (Cole and Yvonne) novel Chapter 390

Chris was trembling nervously in front of the police.

"Even though your parents are refusing to admit it, our investigation has concluded that you imprisoned your own sister."

After reviewing their statements and the reports I provided, the officer announced, "You're being detained."

"I told you my sister has a mental illness. Why are you refusing to believe me?" Chris asked.

He pointed angrily at me. "This man doesn't know anything. You can't believe him."

Chris' shouts were completely futile.

I waved at the police officer to give us some space. "Chris, don't you feel guilty when you say all of that?"

"I have her medical records at home. You can go check them yourself." Chris had prepared the medical records in advance just in case anything happened. He hadn't expected them to actually come in handy.

I didn't believe him at all. "Medical records can be faked, especially by someone like you. It's not surprising that you prepared the records ahead of time."

"Cole, don't cross the line. It was so hard for me to find a good family for my sister. Don't mess with her chances of getting married," he said venomously.

"You're not the one who gets to decide if she gets married," I retorted.

The officer was growing impatient. "You should sit tight for now. We'll verify anything before any further decisions are made."

Chris knew that he couldn't fight back, so he complied and stayed in the cell as they instructed.

After they took Chris and his parents away, the officer in charge handed me a backup copy of the report. "Mr. Joplin, don't worry. I'll definitely uncover the truth."

"Thank you for your efforts," I said.

In the cell, Henry sat with Chris and sighed. "Why did I ever believe you? Now look at this mess you've created."

Henry constantly berated Chris. "What are we supposed to do now?"

Before she could answer, I said bluntly, "I didn't help you for free."

Yolanda was already prepared for that. She nodded at me, saying, "I'll help you with anything as long as I'm able to."

She wasn't that talented and had always relied on her father and brother. Now, it seemed that she didn't have much to offer other than her youth.

She was worried that I would set up a marriage for her too, so she asked cautiously, "Cole, I just hope you won't make me marry someone, okay?"

Worried that I would refuse immediately, she hurriedly said, "I'm willing to do anything. I'll do the laundry, cook, clean… Whatever you want."

She would do anything except marry someone.

"I don't need a maid," I replied.

Who did she think I was? Did she think I saved her just to make her a maid?

I turned around and saw that Yolanda looked like she was about to cry at any moment.
