Mom's tears started flowing once more, her eyes turning red. The sight of her like this broke my heart.
"Mom, no matter what happens, you have me. Why do you have to be with that man?" I wouldn't even want to call Henry my father.
Mom lifted her head, but she didn't meet my gaze. I didn't know what difficulties she had, but I only hoped that she would embrace her newfound freedom.
After a long time, she finally said, "You're right. I shouldn't waste my time on a person like that."
She only missed Henry because they had lived together for so many years. She just never thought that he had no feelings for her at all. When she said she was going to leave him, he just let her go without asking her to stay.
She knew that I was right. Henry had most probably brought his mistress back home to live with him the very day she left. So, why should she still waste her time on him?
"Cole, please get me a lawyer. I want to deal with this on my own."
"Mom, don't you worry. I got one for you a long time ago. I'll make sure you won't lose out on anything."
I was going to get back all that she was owed.
…
Chris looked at the documents that Henry brought back to Joplin Group, falling into a daze.
"He won't help?"
"What do you think? You embarrassed me. Did you know what he said to me? Did you know how the others looked at me? If this happens again in the future, you're on your own. I'm not going to help you anymore."
"I told you a long time ago that if you're not confident about being in this position, you shouldn't take it. Did you think being the general manager was easy?"
When Cole first started at the company, he was so busy he barely went home. Yvonne would not have had the chance to cheat on him otherwise.
One had to sacrifice a lot for the position. Henry never wanted Chris to go through so much hard work and suffering.
Chris looked at the stack of documents on his desk. "Then, what should I do? I'm already in this position. I promised Grandma that I'll make it work."
He was stuck at that moment. Even if he wanted to leave, it would not be that easy.
Henry looked at Chris when an idea suddenly came to him. He asked Chris tentatively, "Why don't you give up the position and get Cole to return? He was reluctant to leave previously, right? Flatter him a little, and I'm sure he'll return."
