Otto continued, "So what exactly is traditional medicine? It focuses on energy balance and meridians that can't be scientifically proven.
"Since it's all mysticism, how am I supposed to integrate it with science? Are you playing me for a fool?"
Matthew realized Otto didn't believe in traditional medicine, but it wasn't surprising. Many people didn't have faith in traditional medicine, especially the youngsters who'd never tried it.
Most people grew up with modern medicine. The doctors practicing modern medicine took care of everything since they were born. When they caught a cold, they'd get hooked up to an IV.
As they got older, they just kept going to modern medicine for everything.
Getting Otto to accept traditional medicine was going to take some work. Matthew paused for a moment before asking, "Do you think traditional medicine actually works?"
Otto looked troubled. He wanted to say he didn't believe it, but he was afraid he'd lose this job.
After thinking it over, he came up with a tactful response. "I studied modern medicine, so I don't really know traditional medicine. I can't make a clear judgment without understanding it."
Matthew roughly grasped the situation. He paused for a while before continuing with a grin, "It's your choice whether you believe in traditional medicine or not. I'm not going to push you.
"Since you applied for the job, how about giving it a try for a month? Think of it as hanging out with traditional medicine practitioners for a month.
"You'll still get your 20 thousand dollars paycheck. After a month, if you think it isn't working out, feel free to look for another job. How does that sound?"
Otto was thinking if he worked here for two years, he still wouldn't believe in traditional medicine.
But he didn't want to pass on the opportunity for a 20-thousand-dollar salary. With that money, he could easily cover the house and car loans for the next two months.
However, Otto couldn't shake the feeling that it wasn't right to take the money without contributing.
After contemplating for a while, he shook his head. "The pay is good, but I'll pass. I'm not the right person for this job."
Matthew was taken aback. "How about just giving it a shot for two weeks?"
He thought the issue was that Otto didn't know much about traditional medicine, making him dislike it.
But he had Tony from the Presetian Sect, Silas from the Gugleni Sect, Kingston from the Fevera Sect, Sebastian from the Thermodra Sect, Mason from the Frostbloom Sect, Jenny from the Medieval Sect, Renae from the Afflictan Sect, plus Pierre and Carson from the Presetian Sect.
Otto paused for a moment and decided to use the situation to turn down Matthew.
He pointed at the phone and remarked, "My friend called. He told me the hospital director wants to meet with you and tell you how bad I am, so you won't hire me. You shouldn't waste your time on a doctor like me, especially with the bad reputation I get from my previous job."
Matthew was stupefied. Recalling Pierre's struggles at the hospital, he spoke up. "Don't worry about that. I think you're suitable for the position we're hiring for. How about you try working here for two weeks and see how it goes?"
Upon seeing how sincere Matthew was, Otto couldn't say no anymore. "Alright. Since you put it that way, I'll give it a go then."
Even though Otto said those words, he wasn't optimistic about the job. He studied modern medicine at a prestigious school and was confident in his skills.
However, traditional medicine felt like mysticism to him. The idea of integrating modern and traditional medicine just seemed absurd.
Matthew sported a smile. "Great. Welcome abroad."
Otto looked worried. "The director will be here soon. How are you going to handle it?"
Matthew chuckled. "What do you think? Should I send him out or kick him out?"
