The Ex-Wife's Burning Elegance novel Chapter 2147

When she thought about it, this was exactly the kind of twisted psychological game Joshua would play.

Desperate, Aurora argued, "But Joshua, I showed up every other time you asked! I was just delayed by those accidents, I didn't mean to abandon you..."

Joshua picked up his phone again, entirely unmoved.

"There's no need to explain, Ms. Williams. Please see yourself out."

Aurora had no intention of giving up so easily. She opened her mouth to plead again when Joshua suddenly lifted his head, his gaze darting toward the door.

"Joshua, what is it?" she asked, startled.

Instead of answering, he slid off the bed, walked to the door, and yanked it open.

Queenie, who had been pressing her ear to the wood, jumped back with a gasp.

A flash of sheer panic crossed Queenie's eyes.

"J-Joshua? Why did you come out?"

"Was someone just here?" he demanded softly.

"N-no..." Queenie stammered.

Joshua stared her down, a faint smile on his lips, though his dark eyes radiated an overwhelming, suffocating pressure.

"But I heard voices."

Queenie hadn't expected his hearing to be so unnervingly sharp.

Realizing she couldn't lie her way out of it, her gaze darted around the hallway, terrified to meet his eyes.

"Stella was just here... She heard Aurora was inside and left because she felt guilty."

"Guilty?" Joshua's smile widened slightly, lacking any real warmth. "Why would she feel guilty?"

"Because she lied to you, so she got scared and ran away."

He arched an eyebrow. "And what exactly did she lie about?"

Both women paled instantly.

"Joshua, Queenie and I are best friends. We tell each other everything," Aurora blurted out. "You don't need to send me away. Whatever it is, you can say it in front of me."

Terrified of being alone with him, Queenie nodded furiously in agreement.

"It's fine. You two can chat all you want afterward," Joshua said smoothly. "I just prefer not to have an audience right now."

Aurora tried to argue, but he cut her off with surgical precision.

"You're trying awfully hard to stop this conversation, Ms. Williams. Are you worried your friend might accidentally let a secret slip?"

Aurora froze, not daring to push him any further.

Shooting Queenie one last, intense glare to keep her mouth shut, she reluctantly walked out of the room.

Queenie desperately wanted Stella dead, but she wasn't completely brainless.

Having witnessed the sheer terror Joshua was capable of inflicting, she knew better than to play games with him.
