Brendon regained his composure and carefully put on his shirt without a single wrinkle. Seeing Ranita standing there silently, he said curtly, "Get some rest."
Ranita nervously played with her fingers and mustered up the courage to grab onto Brendon's sleeve, "Brendon, can't you stay? You said you would."
Looking down at her from above with furrowed brows, Brendon replied coldly, "Shannon had an accident and is bleeding badly. I'll be back soon."
Soon? But he was going to Shannon's side; how could he possibly come back so quickly?
"Brendon... just this once... Can you stand by my side for once?" Can you comfort me a little bit?
Ranita looked at Brendon with teary eyes.
"Ranita..." Just then, Brendon's phone rang again.
This time it was Holly calling via video chat; she sounded anxious as she spoke urgently into the camera, "Brother! Come back quickly! Shannon is crying so much that her eyes are swollen shut from all that blood loss! You need to come back and comfort her..."
In amidst all this chaos in the background came Shannon's soft weeping voice,
"Holly... I'm really okay... Don't bother Brenden anymore. Ranita needs him more than I do right now."
"Shannon! How can Ranita be more important than you?" Holly grumbled unhappily as Shannon choked up again,
"Holly, please don't say that. Ranita is alone in Kurima Hospital right now. She needs Brendon to take care of her."
Emotions churned within Ranita as she grabbed onto Brendon's sleeve tightly with black eyes staring stubbornly at him. Her voice sounded like that of a mosquito, "You promised me that you would take care of me."
No love or affection spoken of - only the final duty between husband and wife.
As he looked over at Shannon who was teary-eyed before returning his gaze back onto Ranita, Brendon eventually pulled away from her grip, "You should rest first. I'll go home for a bit but will come back soon."
The man left with his warmth dissipating from their fingertips.
Lying on the hospital bed looking upwards into space, Ranita couldn't help but smile wryly. She had let go of all pride in order for this moment yet it still ended up becoming an embarrassing joke.
