Not long ago, Quinn had brandished that smooth signet ring and forced Fabian to confess exactly where Julius had fled.
Now she intended to wield the same small ring like a battering ram to drive back the uniformed guards blocking the wrought–iron gate.
But intimidation came harder than memory promised.
After all, Julius was still very much alive, and these men owed unbroken allegiance to the living master, not to a trinket on his wife’s hand.
“Apologies, Mrs. Whitethorn. Even if Mr. Whitethorn entrusted that ring to you, the only voice we heed is his.”
Quinn’s eyes narrowed, two moon–slivers of cool resolve.
Fabian shot forward with a single desperate stride. “Ma’am, surely you’re not planning to take down every guard here. Even with your unmatched skills, you’re carrying a child–one fierce exchange, and you could harm the baby. That little one is all Mr. Whitethorn longs for. He vanished without a word only to shield you and the future heir. Will you really throw away his devotion–risk your own life and put the child in danger?”
He kept repeating the word child, hoping fear for the unborn would break Quinn’s resolve before the first punch was thrown.
Quinn let a quiet, almost amused smile tug at her lips. “Who says I have to swing a fist myself for these men to fall?”
Fabian blinked, clearly lost.
She lowered her gaze to the ring cradled by her fingers. “If memory serves, this manor houses more than just uniformed guards. The Whitethorn Shadow Guards still lurk in its corridors.”
At that, Fabian and the guards blanched, color draining like ink in water.
Gavin’s eyes, however, flashed with unhidden admiration.
“Before he left, Julius told me the Shadow Guards bow to the ring, not the hand. Whoever wears it commands them. Tonight, I mean to test that legend.”
Fabian’s voice trembled. “Ma’am, what… what exactly are you about to do?”

Without warning, Quinn thrust the ring–laden hand high above her head, pale wrist cutting at stark line against the night.
Under the courtyard lamps, the polished ring caught the light and seemed to burn with its own inner moon.
“I am Quinn Bridger, wife of Julius Whitethorn and current authority of the Whitethorn family. Shadow Guards, hear me. If anyone within this manor dares obstruct my departure, subdue them. Break no bones, take no lives–just put them on the ground.”
Her words rang like steel against steel, ricocheting through the entire front courtyard.
For that instant, she was every inch a ruler, spine straight, eyes unflinching.
It felt as though even an army could not have rattled her.
Fabian and the uniformed guards looked sicker by the heartbeat.
In Gavin’s gaze, a bright flicker of respect flared–Julius had indeed chosen a good wife.
Quinn had not disappointed him in the least.
As her command faded, shapes peeled away from the darkness–silent, hooded, inexorable.
They were the legendary Shadow Guards of the Whitethorn family.
More and more slipped into view until a tight circle hemmed the hired guards in.
“Shadow Guards of the Whitethorn family, do you accept my command?”
“Shadow Guards of Whitethorn, await your command!” The answering roar crashed through the courtyard, steel boots striking stone in unison, the combined shout rattling windowpanes like a thunderclap.
Quinn dipped her chin, approval flickering across her eyes as she turned toward the line of household guards. “Well then, are you still determined to block my way?” she asked, voice calm yet edged with warning.
The uniformed guards exchanged uneasy glances, confidence leaking from their posture.
Block her? How?
They dared not lay real hands on Quinn, yet the Shadow Guards would have no such hesitation toward them.
