He had already broken one order by revealing Juliusdestination. Allowing her to leave the manor would be open mutiny.

Quinn turned to Gavin. Is that what you think as well?

Gavin managed a rueful smile. I’d welcome a miracle. If you could shield Julius and bring him home, I’d cheer, but he left standing orders. No guard is permitted to let you pass.”

Then, Gavin, if I attempt to leave, will you stand with me or against me?

Gavin’s brow lifted, the faintest hint of admiration flickering across his features. Former captain of the Falcon Special Forces, she regarded these obstacles the way others viewed morning exercisenecessary, but hardly daunting.

The Huxleys have served the Whitethorns for generations,he said, lifting his hands in surrender. That signet ring on your finger names you the family’s highest authority. So yes, QuinnI stand with you.

He placed his wager then and there. That she would defuse this crisis, that she would, as she did in Celosia, bring Julius back breathing and unscathed.

Quinn dipped into the wardrobe and dragged out a rugged travel bag. Inside went the laptop, a swarm of palmsized experimental drones, and several instruments Fabian and Gavin could not even nameeach tool sliding into place with the precision of rounds into a magazine.

Quinn spun back to the wardrobe, yanked out a fresh set of clothes, then turned toward Fabian and Gavin. They were still rooted to their spots, faces blank with the kind of startled vacancy usually reserved for statues abandoned in a museum at dusk.

I’m getting changed. Are you two planning to stay here and watch?

The spell broke. Fabian and Gavin jerked upright, muttered apologies, and all but stumbled into the hallway, pulling the door shut behind them.

Inside, Quinn moved with soldiersharp efficiency, stripping out of the loose, cloudsoft pajamas she had slept in.

She stepped into a custom camouflage combat suit, the fabric reinforced for closequarters fighting and every seam mapped to her range of motion.

Though three months pregnant, her belly had yet to show, her weight unchanged, so the suit, tailored months earlier, still hugged her like a second skin.

Out in the corridor, Gavin and Fabian exchanged a long, uneasy glance.

You’re seriously taking her side? Aren’t you afraid Mr. Whitethorn will come for your head once this is over?

What scares me is that Julius might not live long enough to avenge anything.”

You honestly think Mrs. Whitethorn can sway him? Mr. Whitethorn is bringing a small army, and Mrs. Whitethorn will be alone. However capable she is, do you truly believe she’ll be decisive?

Don’t forget. Back in Celosia, Quinn was the reason Juliusfather ended up behind bars.

But we’re not in Celosia. Quinn pulled it off there because the Fane family backed her, and the local authorities played along. Those conditions don’t exist here!

Gavin cast a sideways look at the shut bedroom door. Then let’s find out, shall we? This time, we’ll see whether Quinn can truly tip the scales.”

Technically, Quinn should have been untouchable. Three months pregnant, she was under strict orders from Julius to remain inside Whitethorn Manor. Guards ringed the estate like steel piping, sworn to keep her from taking even one step beyond the grounds. Besides, Julius had left more than an hour ago. Even if she slipped the net, she would arrive at the showdown with a yawning sixtyminute delay.

Things would’ve been over when Quinn finally made it there.

Yet the flare he had caught in her eyes a moment ago told Gavin something no odds maker could: Quinn might still shield Julius and keep this fatherson duel from plunging into irredeemable darkness.

The bedroom door swung open. Quinn stepped out in crisp, battleready form, dark ponytail snapping behind her, a duffel bag hooked in one hand. Her gaze swept over the two men like a commander taking roll. Let’s go. We’re leaving.”

Fabian and Gavin traded another look, the same unspoken question hanging between them.

Leaving, however, was easier said than done.

The manor was locked down, steel and manpower fused into a fortress.

True to expectation, the moment Quinn reached the front courtyard, a cordon of guards formed a living wall across the path.

You intend to stop me?
