“Call it the role of a caregiver,” Weston answered evenly. “Relax. I’d never take advantage of someone who’s asleep.”
“About that confession earlier, were you being serious?” Harlan asked abruptly.
Weston realized Harlan must have overheard the words of love he had whispered to Laura during their call.
“Dead serious,” he said. “I’ve never felt anything with this clarity. I refuse to let her slip past me–I intend to fight for her.”
“All right. If you’ve thought it through, I won’t say anything. But if she truly refuses, do not press her. Otherwise, I’ll step in. Even though you’re my uncle,” said Harlan.
“You’re helping her because she’s Quinn’s friend?” Weston asked.
“That’s part of it, but mostly because she’s got backbone. I admire loyalty.”
When the call fell silent, Weston lowered the phone and let his gaze drift back to Laura’s face.
Loyal enough, is she?
Yes, she was. Anyone who had ever helped her received repayment in full.
Take Harvey, for example: he had once testified in court on her behalf, so she found him a job and even hired bodyguards to keep him safe.
So what would she do to those who had once let her down?
Weston murmured, “You still owe me an answer. I’ll be waiting for it tomorrow.”
Throughout the night, Laura drifted through an impossibly long dream, though by morning every detail had dissolved.
Still, she woke feeling surprisingly refreshed.
Clearly Gavin’s prescription had done its job.
She sat up, yawned, and stretched her arms overhead.
Mid–stretch, she froze, last night flooding back in fragments.
Right. Weston had shown up, had wrapped his arms around me, and had murmured something I could barely recall.
She’d been too exhausted to respond and promptly slipped into sleep.
Which meant that after she drifted off, he was still somewhere in the apartment.
He didn’t do anything to me, right?
Instinctively, she glanced down. Her pajamas were the same ones she’d put on before bed, neatly buttoned, and her body felt perfectly normal.
Laura stared at the dim ceiling, replaying last night’s frantic call to Harlan. She assumed Harlan had come to take Weston away.

Shaking off the haze of sleep, she slipped from the sheets, shoved her feet into terry–cloth slippers, and padded toward the bathroom to wash up.
Halfway across the living room, a silhouette emerged from the kitchen doorway, backlit by the soft glow of the range hood.
Laura froze mid–step, breath caught, eyes widening as the figure solidified.
Weston? He never left?
“You’re awake.” Weston’s voice was low, unhurried. “I already ordered breakfast. It’s still warm. I’ll bring it out.”
“Why are you still here?” Laura blurted, shock splashing across her face.
“You fell asleep so suddenly last night. I couldn’t bring myself to leave you alone, so I stayed.”
“You… Last night-”
“Relax,” he cut in gently. “I slept on the couch. Nothing happened that shouldn’t have.”
Her shoulders eased. “Then I’ll skip breakfast. You go ahead and eat.”
“I ordered enough for two. If you refuse, the extra ends up in the trash. Do you want to waste perfectly good food?”
Laura’s lips twitched. Fine. Breakfast is innocent.
“I’ll pay you for my share,” she said.
He flicked her a sideways glance. “All right.”
