Back then, his love had felt like a farewell–tender, lingering, weighted by the dread of whatever waited beyond sunrise.
He had moved slowly, almost reverently, every motion wrapped in gentleness.
He tried to brand himself into her memory, to leave his shape on her skin, his taste forever on her tongue.
It was as if he feared she might forget, feared they might never earn another night.
Tonight was different–raw, urgent, as though he meant to pour the entirety of himself into her keeping.
He swept her into his arms, laid her on the mattress, then knelt at her feet. Head tipped back, voice ragged with need, he asked, “Quinn, do you still want me?”
One whispered “yes” would claim him, body and soul.
From this moment forward, Julius Whitethorn would belong to Quinn Bridger alone.
Quinn gazed at him, cheeks flushed rose, every muscle trembling with the sweet ache of restrained desire.
“I thought you already knew the answer.”
“But I need to hear you say it.”
She bent to him, a teasing finger hooking beneath his chin. The digit traced his lower lip, then drifted down the strong column of his throat to the quickening pulse. “Yes. I want you, Julius— every inch.”
His throat bobbed, desire darkening his eyes to black ink.
Her hand continued its southward journey until, suddenly, his grip closed around her wrist.
A small gasp slipped from her lips.
Bowing, he placed a reverent kiss in her palm, as a knight might kneel before his chosen deity.
“Yours, Quinn–every part of me belongs to you!”
He stretched over her, and she wrapped him in a fierce embrace. She understood then that

escape was impossible for either of them. Only now did she realize how completely she loved
him.
Inside the stark hush of the detention center, Joaquin examined his right wrist, the skin. beneath the fresh bandage already bruised purple and blue.
That mark was Quinn’s last gift to him.
He had misjudged her entirely. Who would have thought she’d unleash an armed drone, mimicking his wife’s face and voice, shattering his focus until the whole plan collapsed?
“So this is misery,” he muttered. “Even choosing how to die is denied me. Is that what you wanted, my dear wife? Death itself has become an unattainable luxury.”
Only the sterile air answered, offering silence as his sole companion.
“Julius, my dear son-”
–“Joaquin’s laughter cracked through the room, high and jagged like glass under a boot. “One day you’ll understand. Everything I’m saying is for your sake. The more fiercely you love Quinn now, the more savage your pain will be tomorrow. And when that day arrives, it will hurl you into pure madness!”
By dawn’s first thin light, Quinn and Julius drove to the hospital to see Lena.
Her spirits had steadied overnight, yet the terror of yesterday’s abduction still raged inside her body. The ordeal had dragged her back into a blazing fever.
When Quinn pushed open the ward door, Lena lay in sleep, lips pale against the pillow, while Rowan sat beside her, keeping silent watch.
“I’m sorry, Rowan,” Quinn whispered, guilt washing over her face.
Had it not been for the tangled mess between her and Julius, Lena would never have suffered this senseless calamity.
“You are not the one who should apologize,” Rowan answered, keeping his tone careful and calm. “Blame belongs to whoever kidnapped Lena, and gratitude belongs to you for you saved her life.”
“How is she doing now?” Quinn asked, worry flickering across her eyes,
–
“Her fever keeps spiking, but that’s expected,” Rowan said, trying to reassure her. “Usually, it breaks after a few days. When she was awake, she asked me to tell you both how grateful she is. She said you and Julius gave her a reason to keep fighting.”
“Rowan, you found a remarkable woman,” Quinn murmured, her gaze resting on Lena’s pale

“I know,” Rowan breathed. “Without her, I would not be the man standing here today. Once she’s well enough to leave this place, I’m marrying her.”
“Then I’ll soon gain another sister–in–law,” Quinn said, a soft smile easing the tension around her lips.
“Mr. Whitethorn,” Rowan began, turning toward Julius, “thank you for agreeing to donate your stem cells to Lena. I once thought we could wait six months, but her condition keeps wavering. We may have to move the procedure up–maybe in two or three months.”
A faint awkwardness crossed Rowan’s face; his words had come out heavier than he meant. He knew Julius‘ body needed at least half a year of rest, yet fear gnawed at him that Lena might not have that long.
“I understand,” Julius said quietly. “If the donation must happen sooner, I’ll be ready.”
The promise settled over Rowan like a weight lifted from his chest.
