A few paces away, Julius slowly lifted his pistol, the muzzle settling with surgical precision on the exact center of his father’s forehead.

Quinn’s pupils contracted. No conscious thought intervened. Her boots were already pounding across the cracked concrete toward Julius.

No. I cannot let Julius stain his soul by killing Joaquin. I refuse to let him carry the nightmare of patricide for the rest of his life.

She ran faster than she had ever believed her body capable of, a blur of black against the ruins.

She reached him at the very instant his finger began to tighten on the trigger, clamping both hands around his gun wrist with iron desperation.

Don’t pull that trigger!she gasped between ragged breaths.

He means to kill you,Julius growled. The pistol never wavered, its barrel an unblinking eye fixed on Joaquin’s brow.

I know,” Quinn answered, voice low yet steady. His power is gone. The law will finish him. If you shoot, no court will call it selfdefense. Would you really trade your freedom for his death?

I don’t care,” Julius hissed. I want him dead.”

Blood ties meant nothing when Joaquin had threatened Quinn’s life.

But I care,Quinn said, meeting his eyes without blinking. There is so much I want to do with you, and prison would steal that time. I will not waste another second.

A flicker of anguish loosened Juliusfeatures, the certainty in his gaze beginning to fracture.

Sirens wailed. Celosian officers poured in, sweeping weapons over the scene until order snapped back into place.

Quinn saw that Joaquin’s wrist was bleeding, his other arm hanging uselessly; he no longer possessed the strength to fight back.

She wrapped both hands around Juliuspistol. The police are here. Let them handle it. After what he’s done, he will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

As the weapon sagged toward Quinn’s palm, Joaquin, who had been staring at the dronelit sky, suddenly snapped his glare onto his son.

Do itkill me!he screamed. What, are you afraid I’ll come for that woman again? Shoot me now and end the threat forever!

His wild eyes glimmered with something disturbingly close to longing.

Julius locked on to those frenzied pupils, fresh murderous heat washing through him.

Julius won’t murder you,Quinn declared. He will not shackle himself to your crimes.

With that, she took the gun fully from Julius and stepped back.

Two officers closed on Joaquin, the snap of handcuffs echoing as cold steel bit into his wrists and began the long walk toward a lifetime of cells.

Joaquin threw his head back and stared into the washedout afternoon sky. Grief and fury twisted his face, as if the clouds themselves had betrayed him. Why should I stop?he shouted, each syllable ragged. You told me never to. This is your faultevery bit of it. You knew I loved you too much, so you turned my life itself into pain!

At his outburst, the faint outline of his wife in the sky stayed mute, offering not even a whisper

of comfort.

A jagged laugh tore from Joaquin’s throat, echoing across the courtyard. Without warning, he swung his blazing eyes toward Julius. Do you really think you and that woman will live happily ever after? Never! You carry our blood. Your mother and I were cursed with misery- how could happiness dare touch you?

Juliuscomplexion shifted, a flicker of ice replacing the usual calm in his hawkshaped eyes.

Still laughing, Joaquin let the officers cuff his wrists and lead him away, the faint clatter of chains dissolving into the distance.

Quinn watched Julius, noting how the color had drained from his face until he looked carved from marble. She lifted one hand and pressed her cool palm against his cheek. Don’t listen to your father,” she murmured, her voice steady yet warm. Our happiness depends on you and menothing else, certainly not whose son you are.
