Quinn stepped out of the bathroom, the scent of mint still cool on her lips. A thin veil of steam drifted after her. Across the room, Julius stood frozen, phone in hand, gaze fixed on a blank screen as though it contained the end of the world.

What’s wrong?she asked, closing the distance between them in two quiet steps.

Nothing,Julius said with a small, practiced smile. His eyes flicked to the damp strands clinging to her shoulders. Let me dry your hair.

All right. She shrugged lightly, surrendering the hair dryer to his care while settling onto the edge of the bed.

His long fingers threaded through her hair like an elegant comb, lifting sections with almost

reverent care.

Warm air rushed around them. Loose strands ballooned upward, catching the light before brushing against his cheek, so soft he momentarily drifted elsewhere in his thoughts.

When he blinked back to the present, Quinn had turned her head, studying him. Did something happen? You seem miles away.

His lips pressed into a thin line. For a heartbeat, he looked like a man weighing whether speech itself might be dangerous.

I thought we were officially together now,Quinn said gently. If something’s bothering you, you can tell me. And if you truly can’t, I’ll understand.

Every person owns a few secrets; not all of them need excavation. With that unspoken truth hanging between them, Julius resumed drying her hair, silent but purposeful.

Only when every strand lay smooth did he set the dryer aside. The cyber attack on Fane Group last nightmy father orchestrated it.

I suspected as much,Quinn murmured.

Among the many possibilities she had weighed, this one had always sat closest to the surface.

Surprise flickered across Juliuseyes, quick as a camera flash.

What I can’t understand,Quinn went on, is why your father hates seeing us together so much.

She had not felt it at first, but after the fire and now this attack, the pattern was undeniable- his father’s hostility pointed squarely at her.

Aside from punching the man once, she had committed no unforgivable sin. Yet the older Whitethorn acted as if any happiness in his son’s life were a personal insult.

He despises me,Julius said, voice low. He believes my fate should mirror his own. The truth ishe has gone mad.

He lifted his gaze to her. Quinn, every calamity striking you comes from my side. Because you chose me, that madman will target you, and no one can predict what he’ll try next.”

A madman’s mind cannot be mapped. Worse, this madman commanded hidden wealth and a cadre of traitorous Whitethorn loyalistsresources enough to weave endless nightmares.

The trouble isn’t from you; it’s from your father,Quinn corrected. You’re a victim, too!

His lashes trembled. Victimhow long had it been since anyone used that word for him?

And before you askyes, I still want to be with you. Julius, I’m staying. As for your father, I’ll handle him.”

His brow knotted. Do you even grasp what you’re saying? Handle him? You have no idea how vicious he can behe’ll stoop to anything, even murder, if that’s what it takes.

Take that fire, for example. The memory of charred timber and choking smoke tore across his mind, turning the quiet hotel suite into an invisible inferno he could still smell and taste.

Quinn crossed her arms and tipped her chin. So whatyou’re worried about me?

Yes, I’m worriedof course I’m worried,Julius said, each word cut from granite. Promise me you won’t confront him. Fly back to Azania for the next couple of days. I’ll keep a close- protection team on you, every step, every mile.”

Quinn’s gaze softened but held steady. And you? What happens to you while I’m busy being guarded half a continent away?

I’ll stay here,Julius answered, voice dropping to a hush that meant the subject was fixed. There are loose ends I have to burn off first. I’ll follow you home in a few daysno more than a week.

I’m not in any rush to leave,Quinn replied, shaking her head. If we go, we go together.

Juliusbrows slammed together. You-The rest lodged in his throat, tangled between frustration and reluctant respect.
