He was so scared. He could swear on his life that he had no idea Caitlin was Gordon's girlfriend. This was a setup. It was a complete and utter injustice! If he had known Caitlin was connected to Master Ninth, he wouldn't have dared to make a move, not even if he had ten times the courage.
Gordon's lips curled into a slight, dangerous smile. He flexed his right hand, his knuckles cracking loudly. "Who gave you the nerve to try and steal from me? Hmm?"
Will felt his airway constrict. Just as he thought he was about to meet his end, a pleasant voice cut through the tense atmosphere.
"Gordon."
Instantly, the suffocating aura around Gordon vanished. He straightened his clothes and turned to face the newcomer. In the blink of an eye, the raging beast was gone, replaced by the calm, elegant gentleman he usually appeared to be.
"Catie."
Will, suddenly rescued, scrambled to react. He quickly moved to Gordon's side. "Ma'am, hello! I'm Will. I'm so terribly sorry. I had no idea you were Master Ninth's girlfriend. I've been so disrespectful, please, I beg you, forgive my ignorance and don't hold it against me!" He punctuated his apology with a deep, sincere bow to Caitlin.
"Please, forgive me!"
Will was no fool. He knew that in this situation, he had to make his position crystal clear, draw a firm line, and get Caitlin's forgiveness. It was the only way he might also earn Gordon's.
Caitlin was completely bewildered. She looked from Will to Gordon and back again. "You two know each other?"
Gordon wrapped an arm around her shoulder, his eyes fixed on Will as he emphasized, "We used to."
Used to? As in, not now. Not ever again. And for the first time, Will felt true fear take hold.
