Chapter 197
Their gazes held for a few seconds before Zeke cleared his throat and looked away.
“Why do I really want to help you?” He let out a small chuckle. “I mean, do you really even have to ask? It's because I... uh... I really meant what I said over the phone last night. I care a lot about you because... you're... I consider you a very good friend.”
“Yeah. Of course.” Millie nodded, forcing a smile to mask the stinging feeling in her chest.
Zeke, on the other hand, felt shaken by himself. Why had it been so hard for him to give her an answer that should've been so simple?
He cleared his throat. “About what we were talking about earlier, I could hire—”
“Zeke, that idea won't work. I don’t think my boss will allow it.”
“Kris?” Zeke scoffed. “He won’t have a choice. In fact, I’m going to call him right now to tell him you’re taking the day off.”
“Zeke...” Millie protested with an exasperated chuckle.
Zeke pulled out his phone and dialed Kris’s number. It rang until it went to voicemail. The second call also went unanswered.
“He’s not picking up because it’s me," Zeke gritted out.
“Maybe you can try my pho...” She trailed off, realizing she had left her phone back at her flat.
Well, she could always get a new one. As much as she knew Zeke’s ideas were crazy, she wanted to take the risk and try them out. She was so tired of living in constant terror around Francis.
But she was afraid her decision would come back to bite her.
“Let me call Luisa. Then she can convey the information to Kris.”
Millie’s eyes widened. “But you won’t... you won’t tell her about...”
“No, I won’t tell her if you don’t want me to.” He offered her a reassuring smile before dialing Luisa’s number.
“Zeke... I’m so glad you called,” Luisa’s voice came through after she answered. “I really don’t like that you’re upset with me—”
“I didn’t call to make up,” Zeke cut her off, his tone annoyed but not angry. “I called so you can pass some information to Kris.”
“To Kris?” Luisa questioned, surprised.
“Yes. Please tell him that Millie won’t be reporting to work today.”
There was a pause. “And how do you know that?”
“Just tell him.”
“I don’t think there will be much need to. I don’t think Kris will be going to work today, or for a few days, for that matter.”
Zeke frowned. “How do you know?”
“Haven’t you seen the news?”
“What news?”
“Kris had his mother arrested yesterday for the attack on Thalassa and the death of his unborn child three years ago.”
Zeke’s eyes widened as if on their own accord. This was the last thing he expected to hear. Millie also looked just as shocked.
“Are you guys at the office now?”
“No, only I am,” Luisa replied. “There are too many reporters, and she prefers to stay silent on the matter.”
“Okay. Goodbye,” Zeke said and hung up.
Thalassa flashed him a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Thank you, Zeke. I appreciate it.”
Zeke’s eyes darted around the room before he looked at her with a slight frown. “Where’s Kris? I thought he would be here with you.”
Thalassa’s half-smile disappeared. “Kris and I aren’t together anymore.”
Zeke almost choked on a sudden rush of air. “What?”
Surely he had heard wrong, but when the look on her face confirmed otherwise, his mouth dropped open.
“I don’t get it. Why?”
Thalassa gave him a rundown of how she tried to obtain evidence against his mother at the party and how Kris caught her.
“So he broke up with you because you tried to expose his mother’s crimes?”
A frown marred her forehead. “No. Because I deceived him.”
“He’s still an idiot in my opinion,” Zeke stated. “But I couldn’t be more glad for his stupidity.”
Thalassa stared at him. “Why do you say that?”
Zeke took a step closer to her, his heart thumping wildly inside his chest. He had come here only to show his support for Thalassa, but he’d received even better news than he expected.
Call him an opportunist, but he couldn’t just let this chance pass by after waiting forever.
“Because it means I still have a chance with you.”
And throwing caution to the wind, he leaned down and pressed his lips against hers.
