The Bond Between Us ( Anastasia and Herman) novel Chapter 1109

When the anesthesia wore off, Jason came to.

His whole body felt like it was roasting over open flames—every inch of him screaming in pain. Lying down was impossible; the wounds on his back clung to the sheets, making every movement a fresh kind of agony.

Dr. Evans, the attending physician, spotted him stirring and hurried over. “You shouldn’t move just yet. Try to stay still, or you’ll risk tearing your stitches,” he warned gently.

Jason grit his teeth, pushing the pain down. “Why are the lights off? Where am I? It’s so dark. Who are you? Did everyone on the bus make it out? Was anyone killed?”

Dr. Evans glanced up at the overhead lights—bright, clinical, and very much on. The ICU glowed white and sterile.

“You’re in the hospital,” Dr. Evans explained. “I’m your surgeon. The whole room’s lit up. You really can’t see?”

The words hit Jason like a punch to the gut.

Lit up?

Panic swept through him, cold and sharp. He blinked rapidly, trying to clear the blackness, but nothing changed. Still pitch-dark.

Dr. Evans noticed his distress. “Don’t panic. Let me check your eyes. It’s possible the explosion injured them—maybe it’s only temporary.”

A quick examination later, Dr. Evans found the problem: shrapnel had damaged the nerves at the corner of Jason’s eye, leaving him blind.

Jason needed a few moments to let it sink in. “So… will I see again? Doctor, will I ever get my sight back?”

“It’s hard to say for sure right now. I’ll need to consult with the eye specialists. Officer Lu, try not to worry. I’ll have them take a look as soon as possible and we’ll update you when we know more.”

Jason wasn’t the type to fall apart easily—his whole career had been about facing danger head-on. Even before he’d boarded that bus, he knew the risks. Just surviving was already a stroke of luck.

“Dr. Evans, how many people were hurt on the bus? Any deaths? My team—are they okay?”

Ever the cop, Jason’s first concern was still the people he’d tried to protect.

Dr. Evans shook his head. “I don’t have details on the others—they’re not under my care. But, Officer Lu, your own injuries are serious. The nerves in your right arm were badly damaged. You won’t be able to lift heavy things anymore. Your face also suffered trauma, but we’ll do everything we can to help you heal.”

Jason tried clenching his right hand, but it wouldn’t cooperate. It was like the arm didn’t even belong to him.

That meant—he’d never hold a gun again.
